Isebenza kanjani

-잖아 is a very common ending in conversational Korean. Its primary function is to build rapport by referencing shared knowledge. However, its nuance can change significantly with tone.

Common Usage Scenarios:

  • Stating an obvious fact: When something is plain to see or common knowledge.
Example: 오늘 날씨가 정말 춥잖아. (The weather is really cold today, isn't it?)

  • Reminding someone of something: When the listener seems to have forgotten a piece of information.
Example: 우리 7시에 만나기로 했잖아. (We agreed to meet at 7, remember?)

  • Giving a known reason: When explaining why something is the case, using a reason the listener is already aware of.
Example: A: 왜 파티에 안 가? (Why aren't you going to the party?) B: 내일 시험 있잖아. (I have an exam tomorrow, you know.)

  • Expressing mild frustration or insistence: When you have to repeat something that should be obvious.
Example: 내가 하지 말라고 몇 번이나 말했잖아! (I told you so many times not to do it!)

Comparison with -지?:
Both endings can seek confirmation, but they have a key difference.
• -지? is more of a genuine question seeking agreement. The speaker is less certain and is checking with the listener. (e.g., 날씨 좋지? - The weather's nice, right?).
• -잖아 is more of a statement asserting shared knowledge. The speaker is confident the listener already knows. (e.g., 날씨 좋잖아. - The weather's nice, as you know.).
