-건 말건
Whether or not
-건 말건 means 'whether you do X or not, it doesn't matter'. It shows indifference. Ex: 네가 오건 말건 나는 갈 거야. (Whether you come or not, I'm going to go.)
Jinsi unavyofanya kazi
-건 말건 is used to show that you are indifferent to a certain action or state, and that the result in the main clause will happen anyway. It is a shorter, more casual form of -거나 말거나.
How to use:
Attach -건 말건 directly to the stem of a verb or adjective.
- 가다 (to go) → 가건 말건 (whether one goes or not)
- 먹다 (to eat) → 먹건 말건 (whether one eats or not)
- 춥다 (to be cold) → 춥건 말건 (whether it's cold or not)
- 학생이다 (to be a student) → 학생이건 말건 (whether one is a student or not)
This pattern often shows a strong sense of resolve or indifference. You are basically saying, "I don't care about this choice; my plan stays the same." Because of this, it can sometimes sound a bit blunt or dismissive depending on the situation.
For example:
네가 숙제를 하건 말건 나는 놀러 나갈 거야.
Whether you do your homework or not, I'm going out to play.
Here, the speaker's action (going out) is completely independent of the other person's choice about their homework.
