er mwyn
In Order to: Er Mwyn
Er mwyn gives a purpose: Dw i'n dysgu Cymraeg er mwyn siarad â'r plant — I'm learning Welsh so I can speak to the children.
How It Works
Three patterns
- er mwyn + verb-noun: Codais i'n gynnar er mwyn dal y trên. — I got up early to catch the train.
- er mwyn i + subject + verb-noun: Siaradwch yn uchel er mwyn i bawb glywed. — Speak up so that everyone can hear.
- er mwyn + noun: Arhoson nhw gyda'i gilydd er mwyn y plant. — They stayed together for the children's sake.
"So as not to": add peidio â: Gadawon ni'n gynnar er mwyn peidio â cholli'r bws. (â adds aspirate mutation: colli → cholli)
Everyday speech often just uses i. Aeth hi i'r siop i brynu bara (She went to the shop to buy bread) — i + a soft-mutated verb-noun. Er mwyn sounds a little more careful and makes the purpose extra clear. Both are correct.
For another way to say "so that", see fel bod and fel y. For the i + subject part, see i + subject + verb-noun.

Leaving out i before the subject.
er mwyn fi siarader mwyn i fi siaradTo add a subject, use er mwyn i + subject + a soft-mutated verb-noun.
