paid â / peidiwch â
Don't: Paid  and Peidiwch Â
To say "Don't!", use Paid â with someone you call ti and Peidiwch â with chi: Paid â phoeni! (Don't worry!).
How It Works
Pattern: Paid / Peidiwch + â + verb-noun.
- Paid â phoeni! — Don't worry! (to ti)
- Peidiwch â chyffwrdd! — Don't touch! (to chi)
- Peidiwch â thalu nawr — Don't pay now
Aspirate mutation. Â changes only c, p and t: c → ch, p → ph, t → th. Other letters stay the same: Paid â bwyta hwnna, Peidiwch â siarad, Paid â gwneud hynny. See aspirate mutation.
Ag before a vowel. Paid ag anghofio! (Don't forget!), Peidiwch ag edrych i lawr! (Don't look down!).
In speech. People often leave out â, and then there is usually no mutation: Paid poeni!. Paid! on its own means "Don't!" or "Stop it!".
Peidio also appears in other patterns: Mae'n well i ti beidio (You'd better not), Rhaid i fi beidio (I mustn't). See mae'n well i and mae rhaid i. For positive commands, see ti imperatives and chi imperatives.
