Mae ... gyda fi (South)

Having in the South: Mae ... Gyda Fi

Level 1

In South Wales, "I have a car" is usually Mae car gyda fi, literally "a car is with me".

How It Works

Pattern: Mae + thing owned + gyda + owner.

  • ... gyda fi — I have
  • ... gyda ti — you have
  • ... gyda fe — he has
  • ... gyda hi — she has
  • ... gyda ni — we have
  • ... gyda chi — you have
  • ... gyda nhw — they have

No mutation. The noun comes right after mae, so it does not change: Mae car gyda fi. Compare the Northern Mae gen i gar; see mae gen i.

Shorter in speech. People often say 'da for gyda: Mae plant 'da ni. In writing, gyda becomes gydag before a vowel: Mae car gydag Aled.

With a name: Mae car newydd gyda Siân (Siân has a new car). With "the": Mae'r llyfr gyda fi (I have the book).

For questions and negatives, such as Oes car gyda ti? and Does dim car gyda fi, see possession questions. Gyda also simply means "with"; see With: Gyda and Efo.

Examples (6)

  1. Mae car newydd gyda fi.

    I have a new car.

Word by Word: Is car new with me.

Car keeps its c because it follows mae directly.

  2. Mae ci gyda nhw.

    They have a dog.

Word by Word: Is dog with them.

  3. Mae plant 'da ni.

    We have children.

'Da is the spoken short form of gyda.

  4. Mae tri brawd gyda hi.

    She has three brothers.

The noun stays singular after a number: tri brawd.

  5. Mae'r llyfr gyda fi.

    I have the book.

The pattern works with "the" too.

  6. Mae digon o amser gyda ni.

    We have plenty of time.

Common Mistakes

  • Using cael (to get) when you mean "I have a car".

    Dw i'n cael car.
    Mae car gyda fi.

Dw i'n cael car means "I'm getting a car". To say that you own something, use Mae ... gyda fi (or Mae gen i in the North).
