-(i)ngiz

Your (Polite or Plural): -(i)ngiz

Level 1

To say your to anyone you call siz, add -ngiz after a vowel or -ingiz after a consonant: ona → onangiz, ism → ismingiz.

How It Works

The polite your has two shapes:

  • After a vowel: -ngiz. ona + -ngiz → onangiz (your mother), oila + -ngiz → oilangiz (your family).
  • After a consonant: -ingiz. ism + -ingiz → ismingiz (your name), uy + -ingiz → uyingiz (your house), vaqt + -ingiz → vaqtingiz (your time).

Who gets it. Anyone you call siz: an adult you do not know well, an older relative, a teacher, a customer. When in doubt, use -(i)ngiz. The familiar -(i)ng is only for close friends, children and younger family.

Stay consistent. Once you choose siz, every your and every verb in the sentence stays polite: Siz onangiz bilan yashaysizmi? (Do you live with your mother?) A sentence that mixes sizning with isming sounds wrong.

More than one person. -(i)ngiz also serves when you speak to a group. To make clear that you mean all of them, add sizlar: sizlarning uyingiz (your house, all of you).

Case endings follow directly: uyingizga (to your house), uyingizda (in your house). The phrase Ismingiz nima? is the standard way to ask a name.

Examples (5)

  1. Ismingiz nima?

    What is your name?

    Word by Word: Name-your what?

The polite way to ask anyone's name.

  2. Uyingiz qayerda?

    Where is your house?

    Word by Word: House-your where?

    uy + -ingiz → uyingiz.

  3. Onangiz uydami?

    Is your mother at home?

    Word by Word: Mother-your house-at-question?

ona ends in a vowel, so it takes -ngiz.

  4. Vaqtingiz bormi?

    Do you have time?

    Word by Word: Time-your exists-question?

A possessive ending plus bor asks what someone has.

  5. Oshingiz juda mazali.

    Your plov is very tasty.

Word by Word: Plov-your very tasty.

A polite compliment to a host: osh + -ingiz → oshingiz.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding -ingiz after a vowel.

    Onaingiz uydami?
    Onangiz uydami?

After a vowel only -ngiz is added: ona → onangiz, oila → oilangiz.

  • Mixing siz with the familiar ending.

    Sizning isming nima?
    Sizning ismingiz nima?

Sizning is polite, so the noun needs -ingiz too. Isming belongs only with sen.
