sizlar
You All
Sizlar means you all: Sizlar qachon kelasizlar? (When are you all coming?) Sizlarga rahmat! (Thank you, all of you!)
How It Works
1. Who is sizlar?
Sizlar is two or more people you are talking to. Use it for a group of friends, children, classmates or colleagues.
2. Plural of sen, too
You (Familiar) has no everyday plural of its own. When you talk to several close friends or children at once, use sizlar. Senlar does exist, but it sounds rough or disrespectful.
3. Matching endings
The personal ending gets -lar too:
- present-future: kelasizlar (you all come, will come)
- past: keldingizlar (you all came)
- with a noun: Sizlar talabasizlar. (You are students.)
- commands: Oʻtiringlar! (Sit down, all of you!); see Commands to a Group
In a question with a noun, -mi goes before the personal ending: talabamisizlar? (are you students?). With a verb, -mi comes last: kelasizlarmi? (are you all coming?), keldingizlarmi? (did you all come?).
4. Case endings
Sizlar takes case endings like any noun: sizlarga (to you all), sizlarni (you all, as an object), sizlarda (with you all), sizlardan (from you all), sizlarning (your, of you all).
5. Siz for a group
Siz alone can also address a group, especially in formal speech. Sizlar is the clearest choice when you want everyone to know you mean all of them.
Examples (6)
- Sizlar qachon kelasizlar?
When are you all coming?
- Sizlarga rahmat!
Thank you, all of you!
Word by Word: you-all-to thanks
- Bolalar, sizlar qayerdasizlar?
Kids, where are you?
- Sizlar talabamisizlar?
Are you all students?
The question ending -mi sits between the noun and the personal ending -sizlar.
- Sizlarni kutyapman.
I am waiting for you all.
- Sizlar ham keldingizlarmi?
Did you all come too?
In the past tense the ending is -ngizlar: keldingizlar.
Common Mistakes
Using a sen ending with sizlar.
Sizlar qayerga ketyapsan?Sizlar qayerga ketyapsizlar? The verb must match the person. With sizlar the ending is -sizlar, never -san.
Leaving off the -ga that rahmat needs.
Sizlar rahmat!Sizlarga rahmat! You thank someone with -ga: Sizga rahmat, Sizlarga rahmat.
