zarur / lozim
Necessary (Formal)
Verb + -ish + zarur / lozim = it is necessary to do: topshirish lozim (must be submitted), borishim zarur (I need to go).
How It Works
You meet zarur and lozim in notices, instructions, news and formal speech. In daily talk most people say kerak.
1. A general rule
Put the -ish verb noun directly before the word, with no case ending:
- Hujjatlarni topshirish lozim. The documents must be submitted.
- Oldindan roʻyxatdan oʻtish zarur. You must register in advance.
2. Saying who must act
Add a possessive ending to the verb noun: borishim zarur (I need to go), murojaat qilishingiz lozim (you need to apply), kelishi lozim (he or she must come).
3. Zarur before a noun
Zarur works as an adjective too: zarur hujjatlar (the necessary documents), zarur ish (urgent business). Lozim is mostly used as the predicate at the end, or in lozim boʻlsa (if needed).
4. Not necessary
Use emas: Bu zarur emas. This is not necessary. Pasport olib kelish shart emas says the same with shart. The noun zarurat (need) goes with yoʻq: Bunga zarurat yoʻq. There is no need for this.
5. Useful phrases
- lozim boʻlsa / zarur boʻlsa: if necessary
- lozim topmoq: to consider it necessary, to see fit

Common Mistakes
Adding the dative -ga to the verb noun.
Hujjatlarni topshirishga lozim.Hujjatlarni topshirish lozim.Unlike majbur, lozim and zarur take the verb noun without a case ending: topshirish lozim.
Using yoʻq with zarur to say something is not needed.
Bu zarur yoʻq.Bu zarur emas.Zarur describes something, so it is negated with emas. Yoʻq goes with the noun zarurat: Bunga zarurat yoʻq.
