-a/-y bermoq
Go Ahead and Keep Doing: -a Bermoq
Verb + -a or -y + bermoq = go ahead and do it, or keep on doing it: soʻray bering (go ahead and ask), gapira berdi (he kept on talking).
How It Works
1. Building the form
Take the verb stem and add -a after a consonant or -y after a vowel. Then bermoq carries the tense and the person:
- gapir- → gapira berdi (he kept on talking)
- kut- → kuta bering (go on waiting)
- soʻra- → soʻray bering (go ahead and ask)
- oʻqi- → oʻqiy beraman (I'll keep reading)
This is one of the helper verbs that attach to the -a form, like boshlamoq and olmoq.
2. Go ahead
In a polite command made with -(i)ng, it tells someone not to hesitate: Savolingiz boʻlsa, soʻray bering (If you have a question, go ahead and ask). Bemalol oʻtira bering (Please make yourself comfortable).
3. Keep on doing
In a statement it says the action continued without a break: U toʻxtamasdan gapira berdi (He kept on talking without stopping). Bola kechasi bilan yigʻlay berdi (The baby kept crying all night).
4. The spoken short form
In speech, -a ber- often sounds like -aver-: kelavering (come on in), aytaver (go on, say it). The spelling rules write the two words apart (ayta ber), but when the sound changes like this, the short form is written as one word.
5. Not the same as -(i)b bermoq
With the -(i)b form, bermoq means doing something for someone: oʻqib berdi (he read it out for us). With the -a form it means keeping on: oʻqiy berdi (he kept on reading). Check which form comes before bermoq.

Common Mistakes
Using the -a form when you mean doing something for someone.

Adding -a to a stem that ends in a vowel.
Siz oʻqia bering, men eshitaman.Siz oʻqiy bering, men eshitaman. After a vowel the form is -y, not -a: oʻqi- becomes oʻqiy, and soʻra- becomes soʻray.
