Noun کا + Infinitive

Giving an Infinitive Its Own Participant

Level 4

Person + کا + action → that person doing it.

How It Works

An infinitive can name an action as a whole. Adding a genitive participant identifies who performs it: مریم کا پہنچنا means Maryam’s arriving.

For a simple infinitive used as a masculine singular noun, the participant takes کا even when the person is female or plural. Before a postposition, the infinitive becomes oblique and the genitive becomes کے.

Complex infinitives can show additional agreement with their own object. Learn that pattern separately; do not choose کا, کی, or کے from the participant’s gender.

Examples (4)

  1. مریم کا وقت پر پہنچنا ضروری ہے۔

It is necessary for Maryam to arrive on time.

مریم is the participant in پہنچنا, not the agreement controller for کا.

  2. بچوں کا باہر کھیلنا اچھا ہے۔

It is good for children to play outside.

The plural participant uses oblique بچوں before کا.

  3. آپ کے آنے سے ہمیں بہت خوشی ہوئی۔

Your coming made us very happy.

آنے is oblique before سے, so the participant phrase has کے.

  4. میرا یہاں رہنا ممکن نہیں ہے۔

It is not possible for me to stay here.

میرا marks the person whose staying is under discussion.
