Identify which item has the quality and which item is the comparison point.

How It Works

Put the reference phrase before سے. If that phrase needs an oblique form, use it: اس دروازے سے.

The adjective’s ending follows the described item. Feminine کھڑکی selects چھوٹی even though the comparison point دروازہ is masculine.

سے is also used for sources, instruments and other relations. Read it as than only when the sentence actually compares a quality or amount.

یہ کھڑکی اس دروازے سے چھوٹی ہے۔
This window is smaller than that door.
چھوٹی agrees with the window.
میرا بستہ تمہارے بستے سے ہلکا ہے۔
My bag is lighter than your bag.
The comparison phrase uses oblique تمہارے بستے.
یہ راستہ اس راستے سے لمبا ہے۔
This route is longer than that route.
The first route is the one described as longer.
آج کا پانی کل کے پانی سے ٹھنڈا ہے۔
Today’s water is colder than yesterday’s water.
The reference phrase comes before سے.
