Animate Accusative Plural
In Ukrainian, when a direct object is a plural living being (animate), its form changes to match the Genitive plural. If it is an object (inanimate), it stays the same as the Nominative plural.
How It Works
The Accusative case in Ukrainian does not have its own unique endings for plural nouns. Instead, it 'borrows' forms from other cases based on the category of animacy.
1. The Rule of Animacy
- Animate Nouns: People and animals. For these, the Accusative plural is identical to the Genitive plural.
- Inanimate Nouns: Objects, plants, and abstract concepts. For these, the Accusative plural is identical to the Nominative plural.
2. Grammatical Animacy vs. Biology
In Ukrainian grammar, 'animate' includes humans and animals, but also personified items like dolls (ляльки) or the deceased (мерці). Crucially, plants (trees, flowers) are grammatically inanimate and do not change in the Accusative plural.
3. Formation
To use this pattern, you must know how to form the Genitive plural (often ending in -ів, -ей, or a zero ending).
- Студенти (Nom) → Бачу студентів (Acc=Gen)
- Сестри (Nom) → Бачу сестер (Acc=Gen)
- Діти (Nom) → Бачу дітей (Acc=Gen)
Examples (4)
- Я бачу своїх друзів у парку.
I see my friends in the park.
Word by Word: I see my friends in park.
'Друзів' is the Accusative plural of 'друзі'. Because friends are animate, it takes the Genitive plural ending '-ів'.
- Вона годує маленьких кошенят.
She is feeding the little kittens.
Word by Word: She feeds little kittens.
'Кошенят' is the Accusative plural of 'кошенята'. As animals, they follow the animate rule (Acc=Gen).
- Ми запросили гостей на вечерю.
We invited the guests to dinner.
Word by Word: We invited guests on dinner.
'Гостей' is the Accusative plural of 'гості', matching the Genitive plural form.
- Він малює красивих птахів.
He is drawing beautiful birds.
Word by Word: He draws beautiful birds.
Birds are animate, so 'птахів' uses the Genitive plural form as the direct object.
Common Mistakes
Using the Nominative plural for animate objects.
Я бачу студенти.Я бачу студентів.Beginners often forget that animate nouns must change to the Genitive form in the Accusative plural. 'Студенти' is Nominative; 'студентів' is the required Accusative/Genitive form.
Treating plants as animate nouns.
Я поливаю квіток.Я поливаю квіти.Grammatically, plants are inanimate. Therefore, the Accusative plural of 'квіти' (flowers) remains identical to the Nominative plural 'квіти', not the Genitive 'квіток'.
Using the Genitive plural for inanimate objects.
Я купую цих столів.Я купую ці столи.Tables are inanimate objects. The Accusative plural must match the Nominative plural ('столи'), not the Genitive ('столів').
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn the Animate Accusative Plural, a learner needs to understand the general role of the Accusative case for direct objects, how to form plural nouns in general, and the specific Ukrainian grammatical distinction between animate and inanimate objects, which first appears in the masculine singular.
- Basic noun plural
Understanding how to form the basic Nominative plural is necessary before learning how those plural forms change in the Accusative.
Level 1 - Accusative Animate Masculine
This pattern introduces the concept of 'animacy' in the Accusative case (where animate nouns take Genitive endings), which is the foundational rule for the plural animate forms.
Level 2
