позаяк

Formal Causal Позаяк

Level 6Sounds Like pozaâk

Позаяк is a sophisticated, formal way to say 'because' or 'since.' It is used in literature, academic writing, and formal speech to provide a logical reason for something.

How It Works

1. Meaning and Usage
Позаяк functions as a causal conjunction. It is best translated as 'since,' 'as,' or 'in view of the fact that.' It signals that the following clause contains the reason for the situation described in the main clause.

2. Register and Style
This is a Level 6 pattern because of its specific stylistic requirements:

  • Formal/Academic: It is the preferred choice in legal documents, scientific papers, and high-style journalism.
  • Literary: Authors use it to add a refined or intellectual tone to their prose.
  • Avoidance of Calques: It is often used to replace the Russian-influenced 'так як,' which is discouraged in standard Ukrainian.

3. Sentence Structure
Unlike бо, which cannot begin a sentence, позаяк is flexible:

  • Initial Position: Позаяк... [reason], [result]. (Since it rained, we stayed in.)
  • Medial Position: [Result], позаяк... [reason]. (We stayed in, since it rained.)

4. Punctuation
When позаяк introduces a subordinate clause in the middle of a sentence, it must be preceded by a comma. If the clause starts the sentence, the comma follows the entire subordinate clause.

Examples (4)

  1. Позаяк надворі почалася злива, ми вирішили залишитися вдома.

Since a downpour started outside, we decided to stay home.

Word by Word: Since outside started downpour, we decided to stay at home.

Here, 'позаяк' starts the sentence, establishing the reason (the rain) before the result.

  2. Висновок слід уточнити, позаяк доказів наразі недостатньо.

The conclusion should be refined, as there is currently insufficient evidence.

Word by Word: Conclusion should refine, since evidence currently not enough.

In this formal context, 'позаяк' provides a logical justification for the need to refine the conclusion.

  3. Він не зміг прийти на зустріч, позаяк раптово захворів.

He could not come to the meeting because he suddenly fell ill.

Word by Word: He not could come to meeting, since suddenly fell ill.

Even in a personal context, using 'позаяк' adds a layer of formality or seriousness to the explanation.

  4. Позаяк проект потребує фінансування, ми звертаємося до інвесторів.

Since the project requires funding, we are reaching out to investors.

Word by Word: Since project requires funding, we turn to investors.

This demonstrates standard usage in a business or professional environment.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the formal позаяк in casual everyday talk.

Different MeaningЯ купив хліб, позаяк був голодний.
Я купив хліб, бо був голодний.

This sentence is correct, but позаяк is a formal, bookish word. Using it for a simple daily reason sounds stiff, so use бо in casual speech.

  • Using the Russian calque 'так як' instead of 'позаяк' in formal writing.

Так як ви не прийшли, ми почали без вас.
Позаяк ви не прийшли, ми почали без вас.

'Так як' is a direct translation from Russian and is considered poor style in Ukrainian. 'Позаяк' or 'оскільки' are the correct alternatives.
