багато/мало + Genitive

Genitive After Quantity Words

Level 2Sounds Like rodovij píslâ bagato/malo

In Ukrainian, the words багато (many/much) and мало (few/little) always trigger the Genitive case in the noun that follows. The number (singular or plural) depends on whether you can count the items.

How It Works

When expressing quantity with багато or мало, the noun must shift into the Genitive case. This is a fundamental rule of Ukrainian syntax.

1. Countable Nouns (Genitive Plural)
If you are talking about things you can count (books, people, cars), use the plural form. This follows the same logic as the rule for numbers 5 and above.
Example: багато книжок (many books).

2. Uncountable/Mass Nouns (Genitive Singular)
If you are talking about substances, abstract concepts, or things that cannot be counted individually (water, time, work, salt), use the singular form.
Example: мало часу (little time).

3. Verb Agreement
When a quantity phrase is the subject, the verb usually takes the neuter singular form (ending in -о in the past tense). However, plural agreement is also used, especially to emphasize the active, individual role of animate subjects.
Example: Прийшло багато людей (Many people came — focus on the group) vs Багато людей прийшли (Many people came — focus on individuals).

4. Case Agreement
Note that the noun only stays in the Genitive when the quantifier is in the Nominative or Accusative. If the quantifier itself changes case (e.g., in the Instrumental), the noun must agree with the quantifier's case: з багатьма друзями (with many friends).

Examples (5)

  1. У бібліотеці багато цікавих книжок.

There are many interesting books in the library.

Word by Word: In library many interesting books.

'Книжок' is the Genitive Plural of 'книжка' because books are countable.

  2. Сьогодні у мене мало вільного часу.

I have little free time today.

Word by Word: Today at me little free time.

'Часу' is the Genitive Singular of 'час' because time is an abstract, uncountable noun.

  3. На площі було багато людей.

There were many people in the square.

Word by Word: On square was many people.

Note the neuter singular verb 'було' agreeing with the quantity phrase.

  4. Він п'є багато води.

He drinks a lot of water.

Word by Word: He drinks much water.

'Води' is Genitive Singular because water is a mass noun.

  5. У місті мало парків.

There are few parks in the city.

Word by Word: In city few parks.

'Парків' is Genitive Plural because parks are countable.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Nominative Plural instead of Genitive Plural.

    багато книги
    багато книг

After 'багато', you must use the Genitive case. 'Книги' is Nominative Plural; 'книг' is Genitive Plural.

  • Confusing 'багато' (quantity) with 'дуже' (intensity).

    Він багато гарний.
    Він дуже гарний.

Use 'багато' for nouns (quantity) and 'дуже' for adjectives or adverbs (intensity).

  • Using the Genitive Singular for countable items.

    багато друга
    багато друзів

If the noun is countable, it must be plural. 'Друга' is singular; 'друзів' is plural.
