було + Past Tense

Interrupted or Averted Past Було

Level 6Sounds Like častka bulo z minulim časom

The particle було acts as a narrative tool to show that something almost happened but didn't, or was suddenly stopped. It can also describe past habits.

How It Works

The particle було adds narrative depth by marking actions that didn't go as planned or occurred repeatedly. It is primarily used in colloquial speech, storytelling, and literary contexts to add flavor; it is generally avoided in formal or academic writing. It functions in three ways:

1. Interrupted or Averted Action: Paired with a perfective verb or an imperfective verb of intention (like хотіти), it indicates an action was about to happen or started but was cancelled. While often followed by a contrasting clause (with але or та), the contrast can also be implied by context.

2. Habitual Past: With an imperfective verb in the past tense, it signals a recurring past action. In this usage, it is often treated as a parenthetical word and set off by commas (e.g., ходив, було, раніше...).

3. Historical Present: In storytelling, було can be used with verbs in the present tense to describe habitual past events vividly (e.g., Було, сидимо ми...). In this context, it functions as a parenthetical marker that can appear at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence.

Key Rules:

  • Invariance: It is a frozen form; never change it to був, була, or були to match the subject.
  • Punctuation: Use commas when було acts as a parenthetical marker for habitual actions.
  • Position: It typically follows the verb in the 'interrupted' sense but often precedes it or follows the subject in the 'habitual' sense.
  • Register: Use this construction to sound more natural in informal conversation or to add a folkloric/literary tone to your writing, but avoid it in official documents.

Examples (5)

  1. Сергій вже вийшов було з квартири, та забув ключі.

Serhiy had already left the apartment, but he forgot the keys.

Word by Word: Serhiy already went-out was from apartment, but forgot keys.

The particle 'було' shows the action of leaving was completed but then effectively 'undone' by the need to return for keys.

  2. Я хотів було заперечити, але промовчав.

I was about to object, but I stayed silent.

Word by Word: I wanted was to-object, but stayed-silent.

Here 'було' is used with an imperfective verb of intention ('хотів') to show an action that was considered but not carried out.

  3. Було, сидимо ми ввечері біля хати й розмовляємо.

We used to sit by the house in the evening and talk.

Word by Word: Was, sit we in-evening near house and talk.

This demonstrates the 'historical present' usage where 'було' allows present tense verbs to describe habitual past actions for vivid storytelling.

  4. Ви, було, заходили до нас у гості.

You used to drop by to visit us.

Word by Word: You, was, dropped-by to us in guests.

In the habitual sense, the particle is often placed after the subject and surrounded by commas.

  5. Я вже зібрався було йти, аж тут задзвонив телефон.

I was just about to leave when the phone rang.

Word by Word: I already gathered-self was to-go, just here rang phone.

Here 'було' indicates an intention that was interrupted by a sudden event.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'була' when you want the 'interrupted' meaning of the invariable 'було'.

Different MeaningВона була заснула, та прокинулася.
    Вона було заснула, та прокинулася.

'Вона була заснула, та прокинулася' is a correct pluperfect, but it loses the 'interrupted' nuance that the invariable particle 'було' gives.

  • Using 'було' for simple past actions without interruption.

    Я було купив хліб учора.
    Я купив хліб учора.

Do not use 'було' unless the action was interrupted, averted, or habitual. If you successfully bought the bread and nothing else happened, use the simple past.
