Verb-Governed Instrumental

Level 3Sounds Like cíkavitisâ / zajmatisâ / keruvati + orudnij

In Ukrainian, some verbs 'govern' the case of their object. While English uses prepositions like 'in' or 'with', these Ukrainian verbs connect directly to a noun in the Instrumental case (орудний відмінок).

How It Works

This pattern is a classic example of lexical government. Even though the Instrumental case often indicates a tool or means (like 'writing with a pen'), here it defines the 'sphere' of the action.

Key Verbs:

  • цікавитися: Used for hobbies or intellectual interests. (e.g., 'interested in history')
  • займатися: Used for engaging in a field or regular activity. (e.g., 'doing yoga', 'practicing politics'). Note: For specific job titles, use працювати + Instrumental (e.g., 'працювати лікарем').
  • керувати: Used for managing people, projects, or driving vehicles. (e.g., 'leading a team', 'driving a car')

Morphology Refresher:
When using this pattern, remember the Instrumental case endings:

  • Masculine/Neuter: -ом (hard), -ем (soft/mixed), -єм (stems in -й). Neuter nouns ending in -ня (like знання) take the ending -ям (знанням).
  • Feminine: -ою (hard), -ею (soft/mixed), -єю (stems in -й).
  • Feminine (3rd declension): Nouns ending in a consonant take -ю. If the stem ends in a single soft or hushing consonant (д, т, з, с, ц, л, н, ж, ч, ш), it doubles between vowels (ніч → ніччю). Doubling does not occur for 'щ' (нехворощ → нехворощю) or consonant clusters (радість → радістю). If the stem ends in a labial (б, п, в, м, ф) or 'р', use an apostrophe (любов → любов'ю).

Examples (5)

  1. Мій брат цікавиться історією України.

My brother is interested in the history of Ukraine.

Word by Word: My brother interests-self history-with of-Ukraine.

The verb 'цікавиться' requires the noun 'історія' to be in the Instrumental case ('історією').

  2. Вона вже три роки займається спортом.

She has been doing sports for three years already.

Word by Word: She already three years occupies-self sport-with.

The verb 'займається' takes the Instrumental 'спортом' to show the activity she is engaged in.

  3. Директор керує великою компанією.

The director manages a large company.

Word by Word: Director manages large-with company-with.

The verb 'керує' governs the Instrumental case for both the adjective and the noun.

  4. Я цікавлюся цією подорожжю.

I am interested in this trip.

    Word by Word: I interest-self this-with trip-with.

Note the consonant doubling in 'подорожжю', a feminine noun ending in a consonant.

  5. Він професійно займається музикою.

    He does music professionally.

Word by Word: He professionally occupies-self music-with.

Standard usage of 'займатися' for a professional or serious hobby.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a preposition (like 'в' or 'з') to match English 'in' or 'with'.

    Я цікавлюся в історії.
    Я цікавлюся історією.

Ukrainian verbs of interest and occupation connect directly to the Instrumental case without any preposition.

  • Using the Accusative case for the object of 'керувати'.

    Він керує машину.
    Він керує машиною.

While 'керувати' translates to 'manage' or 'drive' (which take direct objects in English), in Ukrainian it must take the Instrumental case.

  • Using 'займатися' for doing homework (Russian interference).

    Я займаюся уроками.
    Я роблю уроки.

In Ukrainian, 'займатися' is for hobbies/professions. For homework or specific tasks, use 'робити' or 'готувати'.
