อยากให้

Want Someone to

Level 2

Subject + อยากให้ (yàak hâi) + Person/Thing + Action/State
The subject has the desire; the following person or thing is involved in the desired action or state.

How It Works

A Desired Action or State:
อยากให้ expresses what someone wants to happen. In ผมอยากให้คุณมาที่นี่, ผม has the desire and คุณ is the person wanted to come.

1. The Role of ให้:
ให้ has several uses. Here, ให้ connects อยาก with the desired action or state. Read the whole construction rather than translating ให้ as give in every sentence.

2. Participants and Word Order:

  • The person with the desire: This can be ผม or ฉัน. An understood subject can be left unstated.
  • อยากให้: This introduces the desired action or state. The variant อยากจะให้ includes จะ. Its presence alone does not establish a softer or more polite tone.
  • The person or thing involved: This can be another person, a nonhuman subject, or an explicitly named self-reference such as ตัวเอง.
  • The desired action or state: This follows the relevant person or thing. In แม่ไม่อยากให้ฝนตกวันนี้, ฝนตก is the event the mother does not want.

3. Negating the Desire:
In the supplied negative example, ไม่ comes before อยาก, giving ไม่อยากให้. This denies the desire for the following event.

4. Reading the Complete State:
In ฉันอยากให้เธอมีความสุข, มี means have and ความสุข names happiness. The desired state is expressed by มีความสุข; it is not a bare adjective after เธอ.

5. Another Desire Construction:
ต้องการให้ also introduces a desired action or state. Read the surrounding context to judge whether the speaker is expressing a wish, a need, or a requirement. It is not automatically a demand or a formal substitute in every situation.

Examples (4)

  1. ผมอยากให้คุณมาที่นี่

I want you to come here.

Word by Word: I want give you come at here

ผม has the desire, คุณ is the person wanted to act, and มาที่นี่ is the desired action: coming here.

  2. แม่ไม่อยากให้ฝนตกวันนี้

Mom doesn't want it to rain today.

Word by Word: Mom not want give rain fall day this

ไม่ before อยาก negates the desire. ฝนตกวันนี้ is the event the mother does not want: rain falling today.

  3. ครูอยากให้นักเรียนทุกคนเป็นเด็กดี

The teacher wants all students to be good children.

Word by Word: Teacher want give student every person be child good

ครู has the desire. นักเรียนทุกคน identifies all the students, and เป็นเด็กดี is the desired state.

  4. ฉันอยากให้เธอมีความสุข

I want you to be happy.

Word by Word: I want give you have happiness

ฉัน expresses the desire for เธอ to have happiness. มีความสุข is the complete phrase for the desired happy state here.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out ให้ in the intended I want you to go construction.

    ผมอยากคุณไป
    ผมอยากให้คุณไป

For the intended meaning I want you to go, use ผมอยากให้คุณไป. ให้ connects the desire with คุณไป, the action wanted from you. The supplied correction is for that meaning, rather than a rule forbidding every noun after อยาก.

  • Putting ให้ after the participant in the intended I want you to eat construction.

    ผมอยากคุณให้กินข้าว
    ผมอยากให้คุณกินข้าว

For I want you to eat, use ผมอยากให้คุณกินข้าว. Put ให้ after อยาก and before คุณ, the person wanted to eat; กินข้าว follows คุณ. The task contrasts this order with ผมอยากคุณให้กินข้าว. It does not reject the grammatical subjectless อยากให้กินข้าว in a suitable context. ตัวเอง can explicitly name a self-reference in other desired-action constructions; this exercise uses คุณ and does not impose a reflexive-only rule.

  • Using ให้ when the intended meaning is wanting to obtain a pen.

    ผมอยากให้ปากกา
    ผมอยากได้ปากกา

For I want to obtain a pen, the supplied correction is ผมอยากได้ปากกา. อยากได้ expresses wanting to obtain something. In another context, อยากให้ปากกา can concern wanting to give a pen, with the recipient understood; it does not express the same intended acquisition.
