จนกระทั่ง (jon-grà-thâng) marks an endpoint or result: “until” or “up to the point that.” Read the words after it to find that endpoint.

How It Works

1. An Endpoint In Time
จนกระทั่ง means “until” or “up to the point that.” In เขารอจนกระทั่งฝนหยุดตก, the rain stopping is the endpoint of the waiting. In เขาอ่านหนังสือจนกระทั่งเช้า, morning supplies the endpoint. The word does not tell us exactly when the reading began.

2. A Result
In เขาทำงานหนักจนกระทั่งล้มป่วย, becoming ill is presented as the result reached after working hard. The meeting example ends when a conclusion is reached. An endpoint or result does not itself measure how long the process took.

3. Read What Comes After It
The examples use both a time expression, เช้า, and clauses such as ฝนหยุดตก. Read the whole sentence for the time of the event. Do not impose a rule that จนกระทั่ง must be past and จนกว่า must be future.

4. Compare Related Meanings
จน also has an “until” meaning. จนถึง can mean “up until” or “as far as,” including a destination. ตั้งแต่ marks a starting point. ในที่สุด means “finally” or “in the end”; it presents an eventual outcome rather than naming the limit after “until.” These comparisons do not make the expressions interchangeable in every sentence.
