จน
To the Point That
จน (jon) is a versatile word that connects an action to its result or limit. It translates to 'until' for time/place, or 'to the point that' when describing the intensity of an action.
How It Works
A Result
หัวเราะจนน้ำตาไหล links laughter with flowing tears. เหนื่อยจนพูดไม่ออก describes being so tired that speech will not come out. The subject of this fragment comes from context.
An Endpoint In Time
เขาอ่านหนังสือจนเช้า gives morning as the endpoint. It does not tell us whether the person took breaks. A future endpoint is also possible: the dictionary example ดิฉันจะรอเขาจนถึงพรุ่งนี้ means ‘I will wait for him until tomorrow.’ Read the full construction, including ถึง where it occurs.
Reaching A Place
เดินจนถึงบ้าน describes walking as far as the house. Here ถึง names reaching the endpoint.
Compare Complete Constructions
Compare จนถึง, จนกระทั่ง, and จนกว่า in their complete sentences. The connector alone does not measure effort, uninterrupted duration, or calendar time. The separate word จน can mean poor; the full phrase identifies which meaning is intended.
Examples (4)
- หัวเราะจนน้ำตาไหล
Laughed until tears flowed.
Word by Word: laugh until tear flow
The construction links laughing with tears flowing. The sentence gives a result of the laughter, without measuring its intensity numerically.
- เขาอ่านหนังสือจนเช้า
He read until morning.
Word by Word: he read book until morning
This uses 'jon' to mark a temporal boundary (time limit).
- เหนื่อยจนพูดไม่ออก
So tired that I couldn't speak.
Word by Word: tired until speak not out
เหนื่อย is followed by the result พูดไม่ออก: being too tired to speak. The Thai fragment leaves the person unstated; ‘I’ is supplied in this English reading.
- เดินจนถึงบ้าน
Walked all the way to the house.
Word by Word: walk until reach house
This complete expression includes จนถึง before บ้าน, the destination reached by walking.
