คล้าย
Similar to
Use คล้าย to describe a resemblance. Compare the displayed patterns คล้ายกับ with a named comparison and คล้ายกัน for similarity to each other.
How It Works
1. A Comparison With คล้าย
Use [Subject] + คล้าย + [Noun] in เขาคล้ายพ่อ (He resembles [his] father). The possessive “his” is inferred from context, not an explicit pronoun in the Thai phrase.
2. Naming the Comparison
The displayed pattern [A] + คล้ายกับ + [B] names what A resembles: รสชาตินี้คล้ายกับมะนาว (This taste is similar to lime). กับ links the comparison here; adding it is not a universal rule about formality or clarity.
3. Comparing With Each Other
In เราคล้ายกัน (We are similar to each other), กัน expresses the reciprocal comparison. For the exercise specifically requesting that form, retain กัน. A shorter phrase can depend on a comparison supplied by context.
4. An Approximate Comparison
The repetition mark produces คล้ายๆ. In the personality example, this gives an approximate comparison, “somewhat like mine.” It does not establish a frequency or formality rule for every use.
5. Similarity and Sameness
เหมือน can also express likeness. These words do not create a universal division between partial similarity and exact identity. In the twins exercise, the specifically requested form is เหมือนกัน 100%; the alternative with คล้ายกัน is not labeled universally ungrammatical.
6. Tone Note
คล้าย has a high tone. In the true cluster คล, the first consonant ค governs the tone class; this low-class consonant with ไม้โท gives a high tone here. Changing only the tone does not turn คล้าย into ไกล: those spellings have different consonants.
Examples (4)
- พี่น้องสองคนนี้หน้าตาคล้ายกันมาก
These two siblings look very similar.
Word by Word: sibling two person this face-eye similar each-other very
Uses 'gan' because the two siblings are being compared to each other.
- รสชาตินี้คล้ายกับมะนาว
This taste is similar to lime.
Word by Word: taste this similar with lime
Uses 'gap' to link the subject to the object of comparison.
- เขามีนิสัยคล้ายๆ ฉัน
He has a personality somewhat like mine.
Word by Word: he have habit similar-similar I
Here คล้ายๆ gives an approximate comparison between his personality and mine.
- ลายมือของเขาคล้ายกับลายมือของพ่อ
His handwriting is similar to [his] father's handwriting.
Word by Word: handwriting of he similar with handwriting of father
This compares handwriting styles. The father’s relationship to him is inferred in the natural translation.
Common Mistakes
Not using the specifically requested เหมือนกัน 100% comparison.
ฝาแฝดคู่นี้คล้ายกัน 100%ฝาแฝดคู่นี้เหมือนกัน 100%For the exercise requesting เหมือนกัน 100%, use ฝาแฝดคู่นี้เหมือนกัน 100%. The alternative with คล้ายกัน does not follow that requested wording; it is not a universal grammatical ban on describing a degree of similarity.
Leaving out กัน in the requested reciprocal form.
เราคล้ายเราคล้ายกันThe exercise requests “We are similar to each other,” using เราคล้ายกัน. กัน makes that reciprocal relation explicit here. เราคล้าย may instead depend on an omitted comparison in context; it is not universally ungrammatical.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'คล้าย' (similar to), you should first be comfortable with basic Thai word order and how adjectives function as verbs. It is also helpful to understand 'เหมือน' (same as), as 'คล้าย' is used in the same grammatical position but expresses a weaker degree of similarity.
