หน่อย

Requests and a Little

Level 2

The displayed หน่อย clauses request an item or action, a little more speed, additional waiting, or a price reduction. The full phrase determines the reading; it does not guarantee politeness or an exact small amount.

How It Works

1. Requests in Context
Read หน่อย with the requested action or item in the displayed examples. ขอหน่อยครับ leaves the item unstated; รอหน่อยนะ requests waiting. These clauses do not establish a measured amount, the speaker’s humility, absence of burden, or guaranteed friendliness. A bare action word is not automatically a harsh order.

2. Help and the Beneficiary
Compare ช่วย + Verb + หน่อย with the door example ช่วยเปิดประตูให้หน่อยนะ. Here ให้ is read with the action’s beneficiary; a translation “for me” supplies a contextually inferred beneficiary. ให้ does not force the speaker as beneficiary in every clause or require a beneficiary pronoun to be omitted.

3. Other Request Markers
Read ขอ with what is requested. The displayed requests can include นะ or ครับ, but their presence does not guarantee a social effect or a fixed politeness ranking. Compare กรุณา in its own complete requests without deriving a compulsory formal-versus-spoken division.

4. Degree, Time, and Amount
เร็วหน่อยครับ requests a bit more speed in the selected reading. รออีกหน่อยนะ asks for a little longer; the waiting verb supplies the time context. NIU’s selected หน่อย entry includes hurry, a short stroll, and requesting a little more. Compare นิดหน่อย in a complete small-amount phrase: ขอน้ำนิดหน่อยครับ can be a valid request for a small amount of water. Neither compound nor standalone หน่อย has one English gloss in every context.

5. Questions and Exercises
ลดราคาหน่อยได้ไหม includes ได้ and ไหม to ask about lowering the price. The listener, any precise reduction, and agreement are not guaranteed. The three exercises request มีเงินน้อย for little money, ขอน้ำหน่อยครับ with the standalone request particle, and ขอน้ำหน่อย with น้ำ before หน่อย. Alternatives must be judged against those requested constructions rather than a universal ban on other meaningful readings.

Examples (6)

  1. ขอหน่อยครับ

    Can I have some, please?

Word by Word: request | หน่อย [request particle here] | ครับ [particle]

The item is left unstated in this request with ขอ. “Some” selects a contextual object reading, not an exact quantity stated by หน่อย or a guaranteed polite effect.

  2. ช่วยเปิดประตูให้หน่อยนะ

Could you open the door for [me]?

Word by Word: help | open | door | ให้ [benefactive here] | หน่อย [request particle] | นะ [particle]

The example contains ช่วย...หน่อย around the requested door-opening action, with ให้ marking a beneficiary. “[Me]” is contextually inferred; no beneficiary pronoun is written and no politeness or pronoun-omission rule follows.

  3. รอหน่อยนะ

    Wait a moment, okay?

Word by Word: wait | หน่อย [a little/request particle here] | นะ [particle]

The waiting context permits the selected “a moment” reading without a fixed duration. Neither adding หน่อย nor omitting it automatically determines whether an utterance is friendly or harsh.

  4. เร็วหน่อยครับ

    A bit faster, please.

Word by Word: fast | หน่อย [a bit more here] | ครับ [particle]

The translation selects a request for more speed. The native gives no numerical increase and does not establish a rule for every adjective or a frequency ranking.

  5. รออีกหน่อยนะ

    Wait a little longer, okay?

Word by Word: wait | more | a little | นะ [particle]

รอ supplies waiting as the activity, and อีกหน่อย is read as additional time here. It does not promise a particular event will happen soon or make every อีกหน่อย expression temporal.

  6. ลดราคาหน่อยได้ไหม

Can [you] lower the price a little?

Word by Word: reduce | price | หน่อย [a little/request particle here] | can | ไหม [question particle]

ได้ and ไหม ask whether the reduction is possible in this request. The addressee is inferred from context; the clause does not guarantee permission, agreement, an exact reduction, or politeness.

Common Mistakes

  • Not reproducing the requested little-money phrase with น้อย.

    มีเงินหน่อย
    มีเงินน้อย

This task requests มีเงินน้อย for having little money. Compare น้อย in that quantity description with หน่อย in the displayed requests. มีเงินหน่อย can receive a contextual some-money reading; it does not reproduce the requested น้อย construction, rather than being universally meaningless.

  • Not reproducing the requested standalone หน่อย request.

    ขอน้ำนิดหน่อยครับ
    ขอน้ำหน่อยครับ

The task requests ขอน้ำหน่อยครับ using standalone หน่อย. ขอน้ำนิดหน่อยครับ can also be a valid request for a small amount of water; it differs from the exact requested construction, not from a universal rule banning the compound in requests.

  • Not reproducing the requested order with น้ำ before หน่อย.

    ขอหน่อยน้ำ
    ขอน้ำหน่อย

The task requests ขอน้ำหน่อย, with น้ำ before หน่อย. ขอหน่อยน้ำ does not reproduce that displayed request; other expressions and possible clause boundaries require their own contexts.

Learn This First

To understand 'หน่อย' as a softener, you first need to know how Thai uses sentence-final particles to change the mood of a sentence. You should also be familiar with basic commands (bare verbs) and the literal word for 'a little' (นิดหน่อย), as 'หน่อย' acts as a figurative extension of that meaning to make requests seem less demanding.
