Read หยุด! and เลี้ยวซ้าย as instructions in their stated contexts. Compare particles such as นะ, ครับ, and ค่ะ in complete utterances; a particle alone does not guarantee a friendly or formal tone.

How It Works

1. Read the Displayed Instructions
The examples show หยุด! (Stop!) and เลี้ยวซ้าย (Turn left). Compare the linked verb-form explanation without claiming that every subjectless verb is imperative. The lesson does not require inserting or deleting คุณ in every instruction. Read a listener's name or kinship address term in its full context rather than assuming automatic warmth.

2. Compare the Particles
In นั่งสิ, สิ urges sitting in the selected reading. Compare นะ, เถอะ, ซะ, and หน่อย in their own complete constructions. The spelling of a particle is not a fixed scale of politeness, gentleness, or social rank. In นั่งครับ, ครับ accompanies the invitation. Read ค่ะ in its linked statement examples; compare ค่ะ and คะ in complete utterances rather than declaring one obligatory for every request.

3. Requests and Negative Instructions
The door example uses ช่วย ... หน่อย to request opening the door. Compare ขอ in its own requests. In อย่าไป, อย่า precedes ไป and gives the instruction not to go. Compare ห้าม in its prohibition constructions and กรุณา in its request constructions without imposing an absolute spoken-versus-written ban.

4. Follow the Exact Exercise
The exercises request นั่งครับ, กินสิ, and มานี่ครับ. โปรดนั่ง, คุณกิน, and มานี่ can have meaningful uses in context; they do not reproduce those specified forms. The NIU dictionary gives นั่งลงซิ ฉันมีเรื่องอะไรจะเล่าให้ฟัง with a sit-down instruction, but that single example does not establish a rule that all commands must omit subjects or include a particular particle.

Examples (6)

  1. หยุด!

    Stop!

    Word by Word: stop

The selected reading is an instruction to stop. Urgency or authority depends on the situation.

  2. นั่งสิ

    Go on, sit down.

Word by Word: sit | [urging particle]

In this example, สิ urges the listener to sit; friendliness is not guaranteed by the particle alone.

  3. อย่าไป

    Do not go.

Word by Word: do not | go

อย่า precedes ไป in this negative instruction.

  4. นั่งครับ

    Please have a seat.

Word by Word: sit | [particle]

The selected context is an invitation to sit with ครับ. Context and delivery determine its interpersonal effect.

  5. เลี้ยวซ้าย

    Turn left.

Word by Word: turn | left

In the stated direction-giving context, this instructs a left turn.

  6. ช่วยเปิดประตูหน่อย

    Please open the door.

Word by Word: help | open | door | [request particle]

ช่วย and หน่อย frame the request to open the door in this example.

Learn This First

To use bare verb imperatives, you need to understand that Thai verbs remain in their base form regardless of usage. You also need to be comfortable with dropping the subject (pronoun) and using polite particles to ensure the command is socially appropriate.
