สิ

Prompting and Emphasis

Level 2

The examples contain action prompts and an agreement response with สิ. The speaker’s force depends on the full wording and context.

How It Works

1. Prompts and Emphasis
ไปสิ and กินสิ give action prompts in the selected translations. ลองดูสิ gives a try-it prompt, and บอกมาสิ directs the telling toward the speaker. The NIU dictionary defines สิ as a particle indicating definiteness or emphasis. Interpret its force with the complete utterance and situation, rather than inferring hesitation, urgency, friendliness, or a social relationship from the particle alone.

2. A Suggested Response
แพงก็ไม่ต้องซื้อสิ presents not buying as a response to something being expensive. ก็ links the response in this reading. The speaker can present a choice as evident without making it logically necessary, objectively correct, or the listener’s only option.

3. Agreement in Context
ก็ใช่นะสิ has the selected emphatic-agreement reading. It combines นะ and สิ in this full expression. Agreement is a speaker’s response, not independent proof that a proposition is true. The example does not establish how frequent this combination is.

4. The Requested Exercises
The first exercise requests กินสิครับ with an added ครับ. กินสิ remains a meaningful prompt but does not reproduce that requested form. Adding a particle does not automatically guarantee politeness, and this task does not ban every utterance to an elder or superior without it.

The second exercise requests รอนะ for its selected waiting-request context. รอสิ can also be meaningful in another context; the contrast is between the displayed choices, not a fixed gentle-versus-bossy scale. Neither phrase overtly says “for me.”

5. Related Particles and Trial Phrases
Compare เถอะ, หน่อย, and Verb + ดูสิ in their own full examples. They do not form a fixed strength ranking or guarantee softness, small quantities, or politeness. The written examples here do not supply audio evidence for tone variants or claims about pronunciation frequency.

Examples (6)

  1. ไปสิ

    Go on!

Word by Word: go | สิ [particle]

The selected reading prompts going. It does not by itself establish that the listener was hesitating or must leave immediately.

  2. กินสิ อร่อยนะ

Go ahead and eat. It’s delicious.

Word by Word: eat | สิ [particle] | delicious | นะ [particle]

กินสิ supplies the eating prompt, followed by the speaker’s deliciousness assessment with นะ. A guest setting is possible context, not encoded by the sentence, and นะ does not automatically soften every utterance.

  3. แพงก็ไม่ต้องซื้อสิ

If it’s expensive, then don’t buy it.

Word by Word: expensive | ก็ [response link here] | not | need | buy | สิ [particle]

The selected reading presents not buying as a response to the price. It does not prove that this response is logically necessary or the only sensible option.

  4. ก็ใช่นะสิ

    Yes, exactly!

Word by Word: ก็ [particle here] | yes | นะ [particle] | สิ [particle]

Read ก็ใช่นะสิ as the selected emphatic agreement. The speaker’s confirmation is not independent proof of truth or a frequency claim about นะสิ.

  5. ลองดูสิ

    Give it a try.

Word by Word: try | ดู [trial construction here] | สิ [particle]

ลองดูสิ gives the selected trial prompt. Compare Verb + ดูสิ in complete trial contexts without a claim that the listener will prove something or necessarily see a result.

  6. บอกมาสิ

    Go ahead, tell [me].

Word by Word: tell | มา [toward the speaker in this telling context] | สิ [particle]

มา directs the telling toward the speaker in the selected reading; “[me]” supplies that contextual recipient. The wording does not prove that information was being withheld or describe literal walking toward the speaker.

Common Mistakes

  • Not reproducing the requested กินสิครับ form.

    กินสิ
    กินสิครับ

This exercise requests กินสิครับ, including ครับ. กินสิ is a meaningful prompt but omits the requested final particle. The contrast does not universally ban it with elders or superiors or guarantee that adding ครับ makes any utterance polite.

  • Not reproducing รอนะ for the selected waiting-request task.

รอสิ (when you want to be gentle)
    รอนะ

The task selects รอนะ for the intended request context. รอสิ can be meaningful in a different situation, so this is not an inherent gentle-versus-bossy ranking. Neither native form explicitly states “for me.”

To understand 'สิ', you first need to be familiar with how Thai uses sentence-final particles to convey emotion and intent. Since 'สิ' is primarily used to urge someone to act, you should also understand how basic commands are formed using bare verbs.
