เถอะ

Come on — Let Us

Level 3

Compare ไปกันเถอะ (let’s go together), กินเถอะน่า (come on, eat), and ช่างเถอะ (never mind). The whole expression supplies the reading.

How It Works

1. An Invitation or Urge
เถอะ marks exhortation or a command. ไปกันเถอะ invites a shared action: “Let’s go together.” Here กัน contributes the shared-action reading. เถอะ alone does not always mean “let us”, and it does not automatically make every instruction gentle or polite.

2. Read the Complete Expression
กินเถอะน่า urges someone to eat: “Come on, just eat!” ทำเถอะ encourages proceeding: “Go ahead and do it.” The surrounding context and delivery matter; these examples do not prove that the listener was hesitant, difficult, or already willing.

3. Never Mind and Concession
ช่างเถอะ ไม่เป็นไร means “Never mind, it’s okay.” In ถึงจะแพงก็เถอะ, the complete clause gives the concession “Even if it is expensive.” Do not translate every เถอะ as a standalone invitation or transfer all of the clause’s meaning into that one particle.

4. A Negative Suggestion
อย่าไปเลย is displayed here as “Don’t go.” The omitted subject can be interpreted from context; a shared “let us” reading is not required. It uses อย่า and เลย, not เถอะ. This comparison teaches that complete expression; it does not prescribe a universal replacement rule or say that every negative suggestion has one fixed form.

5. Other Combinations
Compare เสียเถอะ with ซะเถอะ, and เถอะ with the linked นะ and ขอให้ constructions in their full contexts. These comparisons do not establish a frequency ranking or guarantee one level of insistence, politeness, or wishing strength.

6. The Exercises Specify a Form
The first task requests กินเถอะครับ with ครับ included. Bare กินเถอะ omits that requested particle but is not universally ungrammatical or impolite. The second task requests ไปสิ as its urging expression; ไปเถอะ uses a different particle. Tone and context can make เถอะ forceful too, so this is not a universal ranking of สิ above เถอะ.

Examples (6)

  1. ไปกันเถอะ

    Let's go together.

Word by Word: go together [particle]

ไปกันเถอะ invites the shared going action. This example does not establish how frequently that wording occurs.

  2. ช่างเถอะ ไม่เป็นไร

    Never mind, it's okay.

Word by Word: let it be [particle], not be what

ช่างเถอะ means “never mind” in this expression, followed by ไม่เป็นไร, “it’s okay”.

  3. กินเถอะน่า

    Come on, just eat!

Word by Word: eat [particle] [insistent]

กินเถอะน่า urges the listener to eat. It does not prove that the listener is hesitant or difficult.

  4. ทำเถอะ

    Go ahead and do it.

    Word by Word: do [particle]

ทำเถอะ encourages proceeding with the action; the “go ahead” reading depends on its context.

  5. ถึงจะแพงก็เถอะ

    Even if it's expensive.

Word by Word: [concession] expensive [concessive continuation]

The complete ถึงจะแพงก็เถอะ clause expresses concession, “even if it is expensive”. It is not a complete invitation by itself.

  6. อย่าไปเลย

    Don’t go.

Word by Word: do not go [particle]

อย่าไปเลย is the negative suggestion shown here. It contains อย่า and เลย, not เถอะ; no universal replacement or frequency rule follows from this example.

Common Mistakes

  • Omitting ครับ when the task specifically requests กินเถอะครับ.

    กินเถอะ
    กินเถอะครับ

The task requests กินเถอะครับ, including ครับ. กินเถอะ omits the requested particle. Compare ค่ะ in its appropriate construction, without claiming every utterance to an elder or boss requires one fixed ending or that bare เถอะ is always impolite.

  • Using a different particle when the task requests ไปสิ.

    ไปเถอะ! (as a sharp command)
    ไปสิ!

For the requested urging expression, use ไปสิ. ไปเถอะ uses a different particle. This exercise is about the specified expression, not a guarantee that สิ is always sharper or เถอะ can never be forceful.

To understand 'เถอะ', you need to be familiar with how Thai uses sentence-final particles to modify the intent of a verb. Specifically, you should know how to form basic commands and how particles like 'นะ' are used to soften the tone of a sentence, as 'เถอะ' functions similarly by turning a direct command into a friendly suggestion or invitation.
