พวก + Pronoun

Making a Pronoun Plural

Level 1

Thai pronouns such as เขา (he/she/they) and เรา (I/we) can have different number readings in context. Adding พวก (phûak) before a pronoun makes the group reference explicit; the sentence and situation still identify its members.

How It Works

While some Thai pronouns like เรา (rao) and เขา (khao) can be used for both singular and plural depending on the context, pronouns like ผม (phǒm), หนู (nǔu), and คุณ (khun) can refer to an individual. Adding พวก makes a group reference explicit, but it is not mandatory whenever more than one person is meant. For the flexible pronouns, adding พวก highlights the group reading. The sentence and situation still identify the group. Note that พวก can also occur before nouns (e.g., พวกเด็ก ๆ - the children) and demonstratives (e.g., พวกนี้ - these ones).

Inclusive vs. Exclusive 'We':
When reading 'we', ask whether the group includes the person being addressed. พวกเรา (phûak rao) can include or exclude the addressee, depending on context. Adding พวก to a speaker's self-reference such as พวกผม (phûak phǒm) or พวกหนู (phûak nǔu) refers to the speaker and their group. It can contrast that group with the addressee's group; read the situation rather than treating the form alone as a complete rule about membership.

Key Usage Rules:

  • พวกเรา (phûak rao): We / Us; context determines whether the addressee is included.
  • พวกผม (phûak phǒm): We / Us, using the speaker's self-reference associated with male speakers; the group need not consist only of men.
  • พวกหนู (phûak nǔu): We / Us, using a self-reference associated with younger speakers or some women; the form does not determine the group's genders.
  • พวกคุณ (phûak khun): You all, using a polite address form; its suitability still depends on the relationship and setting.
  • พวกเธอ (phûak thoe): You all in the selected casual-address example. Other readings depend on context; the group marker itself does not specify gender.
  • พวกแก (phûak kae): You all / They in familiar or marked usage, depending on whom the speaker addresses or refers to.
  • พวกพี่ / พวกน้อง (phûak phîi / phûak nɔ́ɔng): We, You all, or They (using family words as pronouns to refer to a group of seniors or juniors, depending on the speaker and listener context).
  • พวกเขา (phûak khao): They / Them (people).
  • พวกท่าน (phûak thâan): You all / They with an honorific address or reference form; the relationship and setting determine its use.
  • พวกมัน (phûak man): They / Them (animals or objects). Note: For people this is marked usage that can sound contemptuous or be used familiarly in a particular relationship. Do not assume either an insulting intention or a harmless effect from the form alone.
  • พวกกู / พวกมึง (phûak guu / phûak mueng): We, referring to the speaker's group / You all. Note: These use the blunt I and you pronouns. Their use can be intimate, blunt, or offensive depending on the relationship and setting; closeness alone does not guarantee that they are welcome.
  • พวก + [Name]: You can also attach พวก to a name (e.g., พวกจอห์น - phûak jɔɔn) to mean '[Name] and their group/friends', similar to using a name instead of I or you.

Possession and Reflexives:
You can combine this pattern with ของ to show possession (e.g., ของพวกเขา = their/theirs). A reflexive such as ตัวเอง can refer back to the subject without an inserted pronoun. A longer form can make the group reference explicit (e.g., ตัวพวกเราเอง = ourselves).

Nuance and Register:
Choose the pronoun for the relationship and setting. The collective word เหล่า (lào) appears in other group expressions; this lesson teaches the displayed pattern rather than a blanket rule about every possible combination. In an appropriate formal setting, พวกท่าน (phûak thâan) can address or refer to a group using the honorific ท่าน (thâan).

Contextual Dropping:
If context already identifies the group, the next reference can use the base pronoun without พวก. Repeating the marker can retain emphasis or contrast; omission is not a requirement for every repeated reference.

Examples (6)

  1. พวกเราไม่ต้องการความช่วยเหลือ

We (as a group) do not want help.

Word by Word: Group-we not want help

Using พวกเรา makes the speaker's group reference explicit. Context determines the members and whether the addressee is included; this sentence alone does not establish a contrast with another group.

  2. พวกคุณจะไปไหนกันครับ?

    Where are you all going?

Word by Word: Group-you will go where (together) [polite]

Adding พวก before คุณ marks the people being addressed as a group. The question asks where that group is going; context identifies its members.

  3. พวกเธออยากกินอะไร?

What do you all want to eat?

Word by Word: Group-you want eat what

พวกเธอ addresses a group as 'you all' in this example. The address is casual, and its suitability depends on the relationship and setting. The group marker does not establish the members' genders.

  4. พวกพี่จะกลับเมื่อไหร่?

When are you (older siblings/seniors) coming back?

Word by Word: Group-older.sibling will return when

พวก can be added to kinship terms like พี่ (older sibling) to refer to a group identified by that role or form of address. The selected translation addresses the group as 'you'; other contexts can support 'We' or 'They'. A kinship form of address does not by itself prove a family relationship.

  5. พวกเขากำลังมา

    They are coming.

Word by Word: Group-them in.middle.of come

While เขา can mean 'he' or 'she', พวกเขา explicitly means 'they'.

  6. พวกมันหิวแล้ว

They (the animals) are already hungry.

Word by Word: Group-it hungry already

พวกมัน refers to the animals in the selected translation. The form can also refer to objects. For people it is marked usage whose effect depends on the relationship and setting; it does not automatically establish either an insulting intention or affectionate familiarity.

Common Mistakes

  • Repeating 'phûak' when the exercise requests a shorter second reference to the same group.

    พวกเขากินข้าว แล้วพวกเขาก็ไปดูหนัง
    พวกเขากินข้าว แล้วเขาก็ไปดูหนัง

The first clause establishes the group. For the shorter second reference requested here, use the base pronoun with the same understood group. The original repetition is not inherently ungrammatical; it can keep group emphasis or contrast.

  • Keeping 'phûak' when the exercise requests the shorter numbered-group phrase.

    พวกคุณสามคน
    คุณสามคน

The numeral and people classifier already identify a group of three. For the shorter form requested here, use 'Pronoun + Number + Classifier'. This exercise does not show that the group marker can never occur in a numbered-group phrase.

To understand how to make pronouns plural, you first need to be familiar with basic Thai pronouns and the general rule that Thai nouns do not change form for plurality. This pattern introduces 'พวก' as a specific prefix used to group people or things represented by pronouns.
