เรา
We, I, And Contextual You
เรา can refer to a group including the speaker, to the speaker alone, or to an addressee in context.
The examples select we, I, and you readings; the written pronoun alone does not identify the people or guarantee a social tone.
How It Works
1. Identify The Group
In เราไปกินข้าวกันเถอะ, the displayed invitation is Let’s go eat together. This selected reading includes the listener. Other plural เรา contexts need not include the listener. Compare the explicitly grouped พวกเรา without assuming that marking a group determines all its members.
2. Identify The Speaker
The first example selects I for เรา: I don’t know either. The pen question similarly selects the speaker as the owner. These are contextual readings; the written strings alone do not establish friendship, intimacy, the speaker’s gender, or how often people use them.
3. Identify The Addressee
The teacher-understanding question and the work-submission sentence select you in the displayed interpretations. An addressee use of เรา is possible in some interactions, including where a senior addresses a junior. The written examples alone do not prove that the speaker is a teacher or boss, establish a person’s social rank, or guarantee a kind or authoritative tone. In a different conversation, the referent can instead be the speaker or a group.
4. Read Possession In Context
เห็นปากกาเรามั้ย selects my pen in the displayed translation. เรา follows ปากกา and identifies the owner in context; another context can give our pen. Compare ของเรา in its own examples, without treating possession as proof of one social tone.
5. Read The Requested Exercises
The job-application comparison requests the displayed ผม wording. The alternative with เรา does not supply that requested wording; this does not ban every plural or singular เรา in a workplace or interview. The second comparison states that men can use เรา; it does not measure frequency or claim that a pronoun is automatically soft, exclusive to a gender, or required in friendships or relationships.
Examples (5)
- เราไม่รู้เหมือนกัน
I don’t know either.
Word by Word: I + not + know + either
The displayed translation selects the speaker alone for เรา. เหมือนกัน contributes either here; this reading does not establish a friendship or a fixed social tone.
- เราไปกินข้าวกันเถอะ
Let’s go eat together.
Word by Word: we + go + eat + rice + together + [particle]
The displayed invitation includes the listener. Read the complete เรา...กันเถอะ invitation; inclusion here does not establish that every plural เรา includes the listener.
- เราเข้าใจที่ครูพูดไหม
Do you understand what the teacher is saying?
Word by Word: you + understand + what + teacher + say + [question]
The displayed interpretation selects the addressee for เรา. ที่ครูพูด supplies what the teacher is saying; the native sentence does not independently identify the speaker as that teacher.
- เราต้องส่งงานวันนี้
You must submit the work today.
Word by Word: you + must + submit + work + today
The displayed interpretation selects you and submission of work today. The written sentence alone does not identify a boss or employee or guarantee approachability or authority; another context can give I or we.
- เห็นปากกาเรามั้ย
Have you seen my pen?
Word by Word: see + pen + my + [question]
The displayed translation selects the speaker as the owner of the pen. เรา follows ปากกา; context supplies my rather than our, without certifying a casual or intimate tone.
Common Mistakes
Not giving the requested first-person wording.
เราอยากสมัครงานครับผมอยากสมัครงานครับThe displayed job-application task requests ผมอยากสมัครงานครับ. The alternative เราอยากสมัครงานครับ does not give that requested wording. This comparison does not prove that every เรา in a workplace or interview is disrespectful; choose the referent and wording for the complete interaction.
Treating เรา as unavailable to men.
ผู้ชายใช้เราไม่ได้ผู้ชายใช้เราได้ผู้ชายใช้เราได้ states that men can use เรา. The contrasting ผู้ชายใช้เราไม่ได้ denies that possibility. This exercise establishes the stated possibility, not a frequency, an automatic gentle tone, or a rule prescribing gender identity or relationships.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'เรา', a learner needs to be familiar with how Thai pronouns function within a social register system. It is also important to understand that Thai nouns and pronouns do not change form for plurality, allowing 'เรา' to serve as both 'I' and 'we' depending on the situation.
- Pronouns Carry Register
Understanding that Thai pronouns change based on social context and register is essential for using 'เรา' correctly as both 'we' and a casual 'I'.
Foundations - ฉันI — Casual
Comparing 'เรา' to other first-person pronouns like 'ฉัน' helps the learner understand the specific level of casualness and intimacy intended.
Level 1 - No Plurals And No Articles
Since Thai does not use plural markers, understanding that 'เรา' can represent both singular and plural subjects depending on context is a fundamental concept.
