เขา

He, She and They

Level 1

เขา can mean he, she or they without marking gender in the pronoun. The first example selects a contextual self-reference meaning I; the other examples refer to someone else.

How It Works

1. Referring to another person:
เขาเป็นครู uses เขา as the subject, translated here as he or she. ผมไม่รู้จักเขา uses it as the object, translated as him or her. Choose the English pronoun from the surrounding reference rather than adding gender to the Thai pronoun. Read ท่าน in its own honorific context; this link does not impose a rule that everyone above a certain age or rank must be addressed or referred to with that word.

2. Contextual self-reference:
เขาหิวแล้ว is read here as the speaker saying I am hungry already. The same string can refer to someone else in a different exchange. The selected self-reference does not itself establish cuteness, intimacy, romance, age or gender. Read ตัวเอง and แก with their own speaker-listener reference; neither link requires a fixed pairing with เขา. These written examples do not establish an obligatory spoken tone, spelling alternative or measured frequency.

3. Groups:
Context can give เขา a they reading. The retained พวกเขากำลังกินข้าว explicitly refers to a group with พวก. This example does not require the marker in every plural reference. กำลัง presents the eating as in progress in the selected translation.

4. Possession and omitted subjects:
บ้านของเขาใหญ่มาก uses ของ with เขา for the person associated with the house, rendered here as his or her house. A teaching sentence is not proof of actual ownership. Thai can allow leaving the pronoun out when the reference is understood. The retained sequence rewrite omits repeated เขา for the requested concise version; explicit repetition can still serve clarity or contrast in another exchange.

5. The retained tasks:
The teacher task requests เขาเป็นครู without an added gender noun; it does not ban naming gender when relevant. The cat task requests แมวหิว มันอยากกินปลา with มัน for the selected animal reference; it does not establish an absolute human-versus-animal pronoun boundary. The market task requests one established subject across the action sequence rather than a new subject in each clause.

6. Evidence scope:
The NIU dictionary lists third-person pronoun meanings and displays five complete reference clauses. A study of self-reference among a selected university sample also lists เขา as first-person usage for respondents of both genders. These are bounded written witnesses, not population frequency, obligatory status rules or pronunciation evidence.

Examples (5)

  1. เขาหิวแล้ว

    I'm hungry already.

Word by Word: I [selected self-reference] hungry already

The selected exchange reads เขา as I and แล้ว as already here. A different exchange can give เขา a third-person reference; the string alone does not prove an affectionate or romantic relationship.

  2. เขาเป็นครู

    He/She is a teacher.

Word by Word: he/she be teacher

เขา is the subject referring to another person in this example. The pronoun does not identify that person’s gender or establish their social rank.

  3. ผมไม่รู้จักเขา

    I don't know him/her.

    Word by Word: I not be-acquainted-with him/her

ผม is the speaker reference, ไม่ negates รู้จัก, and เขา is the object. รู้จัก is rendered functionally as knowing or being acquainted with someone; this written sentence is not evidence of the actual speaker’s gender.

  4. บ้านของเขาใหญ่มาก

    His/Her house is very big.

Word by Word: house of him/her big very

The displayed ของ construction relates the house to the person referred to by เขา. ใหญ่มาก states very big in the example; neither the size nor ownership is independently verified.

  5. พวกเขากำลังกินข้าว

    They are eating (rice).

Word by Word: group they in-progress eat rice

The displayed พวก marks a group reference. กำลัง presents eating as in progress, and ข้าว appears in the eating expression; this does not require พวก in every plural reference.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding a gender noun when the task requests only a pronoun.

    เขาผู้ชายเป็นครู
    เขาเป็นครู

The task requests เขาเป็นครู for he or she is a teacher. เขาผู้ชายเป็นครู adds ผู้ชาย, meaning man, and does not reproduce the requested wording. This exercise does not ban explicitly mentioning gender when it is relevant.

  • Not using the requested pronoun in the cat-reference task.

    แมวหิว เขาอยากกินปลา
    แมวหิว มันอยากกินปลา

The task requests แมวหิว มันอยากกินปลา, using มัน for the selected cat reference. แมวหิว เขาอยากกินปลา does not use that requested pronoun. This is a written reference task, not a universal ban on human-like reference to animals in other contexts.

  • Repeating the subject when the task requests a concise action sequence.

    เขาไปตลาด แล้วเขาซื้อผัก แล้วเขากลับบ้าน
    เขาไปตลาด แล้วซื้อผัก แล้วก็กลับบ้าน

The task requests เขาไปตลาด แล้วซื้อผัก แล้วก็กลับบ้าน, with the established subject understood after the first clause through dropping the pronoun. The repeated เขา version can still be grammatical, but does not reproduce this requested concise version. The rewrite does not require omission in every sequence or establish an English-translation defect.
