รู้ว่า
Know That
รู้ว่า links knowing to its content. The examples include statements and an embedded question about a shop’s opening time.
How It Works
1. Read The Known Content
ผมรู้ว่าเขาไม่มา presents knowledge that he is not coming. ฉันรู้ว่าคุณชอบกินส้มตำ presents knowledge of the listener’s preference. เขารู้ว่าฉันอยู่ที่นี่ includes a statement about location after ว่า.
2. Read The Opening-Time Question
คุณรู้ไหมว่าร้านเปิดกี่โมง asks whether the listener knows what time the shop opens. ไหม marks the question to the listener; กี่โมง asks for the opening-time value within its content. Learn this complete sentence rather than requiring every รู้ว่า complement to be a statement with the same shape.
3. Compare Familiarity And Belief
The familiarity task uses ผมรู้จักคุณ, “I know you.” รู้จัก can express being acquainted with someone. That differs from knowing a statement about someone. Compare คิดว่า presenting a thought or belief with รู้ว่า presenting knowledge. The grammar example reports the speaker’s stance; it does not independently verify the stated fact.
4. Keep The Displayed Pattern Intact
ว่า is included in these examples. Read any proposed omission or change of vocabulary in its own full context, rather than treating it as an automatic spoken-to-written conversion.
Examples (4)
- ผมรู้ว่าเขาไม่มา
I know (that) he isn't coming.
Word by Word: I | know | that | he | not | come
ว่า introduces the content the speaker presents as known: he is not coming. The example does not independently verify his plans.
- คุณรู้ไหมว่าร้านเปิดกี่โมง
Do you know what time the shop opens?
Word by Word: you | know | [question] | that | shop | open | what time
This shows how to use the pattern in a question using the particle ไหม.
- ฉันรู้ว่าคุณชอบกินส้มตำ
I know that you like eating papaya salad.
Word by Word: I | know | that | you | like | eat | papaya salad
The sentence presents knowledge of the listener’s food preference. It does not measure how frequent this wording is.
- เขารู้ว่าฉันอยู่ที่นี่
He knows that I am here.
Word by Word: he | know | that | I | be at | here
Uses อยู่ to describe a location within the known clause.
Common Mistakes
For the intended familiarity meaning “I know you,” using รู้ instead of รู้จัก.
ผมรู้คุณผมรู้จักคุณThis task requests ผมรู้จักคุณ for being familiar with the listener. ผมรู้คุณ does not give that ordinary familiarity construction. Other uses of รู้ with information about a person need their own complete context.
