Verb + มา + Duration + แล้ว
Have Been Doing It for
Predicate + มา + Duration + แล้ว looks back over the stated duration in the examples: ผมทำงานที่นี่มาห้าปีแล้ว means “I have been working here for five years”. This is not a word-for-word rule for every English perfect tense.
How It Works
1. A Situation Over a Stated Duration
ผมทำงานที่นี่มาห้าปีแล้ว describes working here over five years up to now in the example. This does not mean the speaker worked every minute without sleeping or taking a break. A continuing habit, role, or state can span a period.
2. The Complete Predicate Comes First
In เขาเรียนภาษาไทยมาได้สามเดือนแล้ว, เรียนภาษาไทย is “study Thai” before มา. In เขารอคุณมาสองชั่วโมงแล้ว, รอคุณ is “wait for you”. These examples teach the displayed complete predicates and their order, not a rule that every Thai direct object must always be adjacent to its verb.
3. Measuring Time With ได้
The studying example places ได้ before สามเดือน to indicate the elapsed three-month period. Do not read this use as the ability “can study”; the linked ได้ entry teaches a separate ability construction. No successful professional milestone is entailed by this duration wording.
4. A Starting Point
เราอยู่บ้านหลังนี้มาตั้งแต่ปีที่แล้ว uses ตั้งแต่, “since”, with the starting point ปีที่แล้ว, “last year”. Here the final แล้ว is part of “last year”, not a separate sentence-final completion particle. Compare a duration such as ห้าปี with a starting point such as ปีที่แล้ว; they answer different time questions.
5. Read Motion and Duration in Context
The exercise requests ผมทำงานมาห้าปีแล้ว with มา after ทำงาน. The alternative ผมมาทำงานห้าปีแล้ว places มา before the work predicate and can invoke coming to work. Its full context determines the time reading; do not automatically translate it as an event exactly five years ago or prohibit every pre-verbal มา duration construction.
Examples (5)
- ผมทำงานที่นี่มาห้าปีแล้ว
I have been working here for five years.
Word by Word: I work at here [duration aspect] five year [already elapsed]
ทำงานที่นี่ identifies working here; มาห้าปีแล้ว gives the five-year duration up to now in this example, without requiring continuous work every minute.
- เขาเรียนภาษาไทยมาได้สามเดือนแล้ว
He has been studying Thai for three months.
Word by Word: He study language Thai [duration aspect] [elapsed-time marker] three month [already elapsed]
Here, ได้ measures the elapsed three months in มาได้สามเดือนแล้ว. It is not the ability reading “can” taught by the separate ได้ link.
- เราอยู่บ้านหลังนี้มาตั้งแต่ปีที่แล้ว
We have been living in this house since last year.
Word by Word: We live house classifier this [duration aspect] since last-year
มาตั้งแต่ปีที่แล้ว gives the starting point “since last year” for living here. The แล้ว inside ปีที่แล้ว belongs to the time expression “last year”.
- เขารอคุณมาสองชั่วโมงแล้ว
He has been waiting for you for two hours.
Word by Word: He wait you [duration aspect] two hour [already elapsed]
รอคุณ is the complete waiting predicate before มา. สองชั่วโมง gives the two-hour duration.
- ฝนตกมาทั้งวันแล้ว
It has been raining all day.
Word by Word: Rain fall [duration aspect] all day [already elapsed]
The example describes raining over the day up to now. It does not by itself report exact rainfall measurements or prove there was no brief interruption.
Common Mistakes
Moving ภาษาไทย out of the requested เรียนภาษาไทย predicate.
ผมเรียนมาภาษาไทยสามเดือนแล้วผมเรียนภาษาไทยมาสามเดือนแล้วFor this task, place เรียนภาษาไทย before มา: ผมเรียนภาษาไทยมาสามเดือนแล้ว. ผมเรียนมาภาษาไทยสามเดือนแล้ว breaks up that requested study-Thai predicate. This is a comparison of the displayed construction, not a rule about every object in Thai.
Using pre-verbal มา when the task requests the postverbal duration pattern.
ผมมาทำงานห้าปีแล้วผมทำงานมาห้าปีแล้วThe task requests ผมทำงานมาห้าปีแล้ว, with มา after the working predicate. ผมมาทำงานห้าปีแล้ว uses a different ordering that may involve coming to work. It is not automatically a grammatical error or an event exactly five years ago; use the requested pattern for this exercise.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'Verb + มา + Duration + แล้ว', you need to know how 'มา' functions as a directional marker for time (up to now) and how 'แล้ว' marks the completion of a period. You also need to be familiar with basic time units used to express duration.
- Verb + มาUp to Now
This pattern uses 'มา' as a directional marker indicating that an action has continued from the past up until the present moment.
Level 2 - แล้วAlready Done
The particle 'แล้ว' is used at the end of the phrase to indicate the completion of the time duration or that the state has already been reached.
Level 1 - Classifier Basics
Understanding how to express duration in Thai often involves time units which function similarly to classifiers.
