พึง
Formal Should
พึง means should or ought to in these formal examples. Read the action that follows it and the setting of the whole sentence.
How It Works
1. Read The Action After พึง
The dictionary explains พึง through both ควร and ต้อง. In นักเรียนพึงปฏิบัติตามระเบียบของโรงเรียน, it presents following the school regulations as what students ought to do. ข้อพึงระวังในการใช้สารเคมี names precautions to observe when using chemicals.
2. Read A Quotation In Its Setting
รัฐพึงจัดให้มีกฎหมายเพียงเท่าที่จำเป็น quotes the opening of Constitution section 77. The example is only that opening, not the whole provision. Its English rendering does not make “shall” the only meaning of พึง or establish a fixed strength ranking against ต้อง.
3. Read The Negative
In the displayed morality sentence, ไม่พึง presents an action as something that ought not to be done. It is an illustrative sentence, not an identified quotation from a law.
4. Keep The Spellings Apart
พึง has no tone mark. พึ่ง, with ่, includes both “rely on” and a recent-action use. The dictionary also gives เพิ่ง for that recent-action use. A recent action and what ought to be done are different meanings. Follow the spelling and meaning requested in each exercise.
Examples (5)
- รัฐพึงจัดให้มีกฎหมายเพียงเท่าที่จำเป็น
The State shall provide only such laws as are necessary.
Word by Word: State / shall / arrange / give / have / law / only / as much as / that / necessary
This is the opening wording of Constitution section 77, not the whole provision. พึง precedes the action expected of the State in that text.
- นักเรียนพึงปฏิบัติตามระเบียบของโรงเรียน
Students ought to observe the school regulations.
Word by Word: Student / shall / practice / follow / regulation / of / school
Here, พึง presents following the school regulations as what students ought to do. The sentence is an illustration, not an identified school’s quoted code.
- ข้อพึงระวังในการใช้สารเคมี
Precautions to be observed when using chemicals.
Word by Word: Point / shall / be careful / in / use / chemical
ข้อพึงระวัง names precautions to observe in using chemicals. This phrase illustrates the modal use; it does not establish how frequently it appears on signs or in manuals.
- บุคคลพึงใช้สิทธิโดยสุจริต
A person shall exercise their rights in good faith.
Word by Word: Person / shall / use / right / by / honest
The example presents exercising rights in good faith as something a person ought to do. No specific legal source is established for this sentence.
- ผู้ใดไม่พึงกระทำการอันเป็นการขัดต่อศีลธรรม
A person should not perform acts that are contrary to morality.
Word by Word: Whoever / not / shall / perform / act / which / be / conflict / toward / morality
ไม่พึง introduces the action that ought not to be done in this formal example. It is a displayed moral statement, not a verified quotation from a law.
Common Mistakes
When writing “He ought to do good” with พึง, adding the tone mark of พึ่ง.
เขาพึ่งทำความดีเขาพึงทำความดีThis exercise asks for พึง without ่: เขาพึงทำความดี. เขาพึ่งทำความดี uses a different word and does not give the requested “ought to” meaning. พึ่ง can also mean that an action happened recently; the dictionary also lists เพิ่ง for that use. That recent-action use is different from the modal พึง.
For the requested sentence เธอควรไปกินข้าวได้แล้ว, replacing ควร with พึง.
เธอพึงไปกินข้าวได้แล้วเธอควรไปกินข้าวได้แล้วThe exercise requests เธอควรไปกินข้าวได้แล้ว with ควร. เธอพึงไปกินข้าวได้แล้ว uses a different auxiliary and does not reproduce that requested wording. The dictionary also gives พึง an ought-to meaning; this comparison does not make the alternative sentence ungrammatical or establish a fixed register boundary.
How It Connects
Learn This First
The pattern 'พึง' is a high-level auxiliary verb used in formal, legal, and moral contexts to express a duty or requirement (translated as 'shall' in legal English). To understand it, learners should already be familiar with basic modal verbs like 'should' (ควร) and 'must' (ต้อง), and be aware of how Thai register shifts from everyday speech to formal written codes.
- ควรAdvice with ควร
Understanding the standard word for 'should' provides the semantic foundation for 'พึง', which is its formal and legal counterpart.
Level 1 - ต้องMust
Since 'พึง' functions as a legal 'shall' or mandatory duty, understanding the basic word for 'must' is essential for context.
Level 1 - Speech And Writing Differ
As 'พึง' is primarily used in statutes, codes of conduct, and formal writing, the learner must understand the distinction between spoken and written Thai registers.
