ต้อง

Must

Level 1

ต้อง expresses must or have to in the displayed action sentences. เขาต้องหิวแน่ๆ instead presents a strong inference about hunger. The dictionary lists several lexical senses, so this entry focuses on these complete constructions.

How It Works

1. Read the Displayed Requirement
ผมต้องไปทำงาน says that the speaker has to go to work. คุณต้องกินยา presents taking medicine as a requirement or instruction in its intended context; this grammar example does not establish a medical recommendation. เราต้องรีบไป presents hurrying and going as necessary. Compare no verb conjugation for the separate absence of person or tense inflection, without assuming that a marker alone fixes every reading.

2. Distinguish an Inference
เขาต้องหิวแน่ๆ presents the speaker’s strong inference that he is hungry. It does not order him to become hungry, and it does not establish that the inference is true. Interpret the complete sentence and situation rather than treating every ต้อง as an instruction.

3. Read the Negative Order
The first exercise requests คุณไม่ต้องไป, meaning you do not need to go in this context. คุณต้องไม่ไป expresses a requirement not to go instead. The position of ไม่ distinguishes these displayed readings. ไม่ต้อง can also function as a contextual directive; this exercise requests the no-need reading.

4. Follow the Water-Request Task
The second exercise requests ผมต้องการน้ำ, using ต้องการ for wanting or needing water. The dictionary gives ต้องการ as want, need, or require, and also lists ต้องมี for must have. Do not replace the requested complete form with ผมต้องน้ำ or turn this one task into a ban on every omitted verb or every other lexical sense of ต้อง.

5. Notice the Unwritten Subject
ต้องทำแบบนี้ครับ does not write a subject. The English [You] is inferred in the intended instruction; ครับ is the displayed sentence-final particle. Its presence alone does not guarantee that every instruction is polite in every social context.

Examples (5)

  1. ผมต้องไปทำงาน

I have to go to work.

Word by Word: I + must + go + work

ต้อง appears before ไปทำงาน in the displayed statement of having to go to work. The sentence does not specify the source of the requirement.

  2. คุณต้องกินยา

    You must take [eat] medicine.

Word by Word: You + must + eat + medicine

The speaker presents taking medicine as a requirement or instruction. This is a grammar example, not an independent medical recommendation.

  3. เขาต้องหิวแน่ๆ

He must be hungry for sure.

Word by Word: he | [strong inference] be hungry | for sure

The complete sentence presents a strong inference about hunger, with แน่ๆ adding certainty to the speaker’s assertion. It neither imposes hunger as a duty nor proves the assertion true.

  4. เราต้องรีบไป

    We must hurry and go.

Word by Word: We + must + hurry + go

The displayed requirement covers รีบไป, hurrying and going. No particular deadline or reason is stated.

  5. ต้องทำแบบนี้ครับ

[You] must do it like this.

Word by Word: must | do | like this | [sentence-final particle]

The native sentence has no written subject. [You] is inferred for this instruction; ครับ is its displayed sentence-final particle.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the must-not statement when this exercise requests no need to go.

    คุณต้องไม่ไป
    คุณไม่ต้องไป

For the requested no-need reading, reproduce คุณไม่ต้องไป. คุณต้องไม่ไป instead requires not going in this context. Both can be meaningful sentences, but they do not express the same requested message.

  • Not using the requested complete ต้องการน้ำ water-request form.

    ผมต้องน้ำ
    ผมต้องการน้ำ

The task requests ผมต้องการน้ำ, expressing want or need for water with ต้องการ. ผมต้องน้ำ does not reproduce that construction. This is a specified-form task, not a universal claim that every ต้อง must be followed by a written verb in all lexical senses and contexts.
