ต้น
Counting with ต้น
ต้นไม้สามต้น: three trees
เสาไฟฟ้าสองต้น: two electric poles
ตะไคร้ห้าต้น: five lemongrass stalks
Learn the classifier in each complete expression rather than choosing one from an object’s shape alone.
How It Works
1. Read the Complete Counting Expression
ต้นไม้สามต้น means three trees. The noun ต้นไม้ names what is counted, สาม gives the number, and the final ต้น is the classifier in this example. Compare the linked Noun + Number + Classifier examples without turning the displayed pattern into a ban on every alternative noun expression.
2. Keep the Counted Unit Clear
กุหลาบต้นนี้สวยมาก refers to this rose plant, which is very beautiful. ตะไคร้ห้าต้น counts five individual lemongrass stalks. Counting three whole bamboo clumps is a different task from counting three individual bamboo plants or stems: the exercise requests ไผ่สามกอ for the clumps. ไผ่สามต้น can have an individual-plant reading and is not universally ungrammatical.
3. Learn the Pole Example Separately
เสาไฟฟ้าสองต้น means two electric poles. This complete expression uses ต้น even though the poles are not plants. It does not establish a rule that every long, straight, or vertical object takes the same classifier.
4. Follow the Requested Exercise Meaning
The flower exercise counts individual blooms with ดอกไม้สามดอก, rather than three whole plants. The mushroom exercise requests เห็ดสามดอก. Learn those complete counting expressions; no claim about mushrooms lacking trunks in a Thai conceptual system is needed.
5. Compare Linked Constructions
The linked Noun + Classifier + นี้/นั้น entry teaches pointing constructions; กุหลาบต้นนี้ in the third example identifies this rose plant. The linked เป็นต้น expression means and so on in its list examples. Its full expression has a separate function from the classifier at the end of ต้นไม้สามต้น. The spelling ตน is also a different word; compare its self and supernatural-being meanings in their own complete expressions.
Examples (4)
- ต้นไม้สามต้น
Three trees
Word by Word: tree + three + classifier
This complete expression counts three trees with ต้น. ต้นไม้ is the noun, and the final ต้น is its counting classifier here.
- เสาไฟฟ้าสองต้น
Two electric poles
Word by Word: pole-electric + two + classifier
The displayed electric-pole expression uses ต้น. Learn this noun-classifier combination without deriving a universal rule from the poles’ vertical shape.
- กุหลาบต้นนี้สวยมาก
This rose bush is very beautiful.
Word by Word: rose + classifier + this + beautiful + very
ต้นนี้ identifies this rose plant in the displayed sentence, which says it is very beautiful. It is not a count of individual cut blooms.
- ตะไคร้ห้าต้น
Five stalks of lemongrass
Word by Word: lemongrass + five + classifier
The example counts five individual lemongrass stalks with ต้น. A count of whole clumps would use a different unit.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested count of three flower blooms.
ดอกไม้สามต้นดอกไม้สามดอกThe task requests ดอกไม้สามดอก for three individual blooms. ดอกไม้สามต้น does not reproduce that requested bloom count; counting whole plants is a different intended unit.
Counting individual bamboo plants when the task asks for whole clumps.
ไผ่สามต้นไผ่สามกอThe task requests ไผ่สามกอ for three whole bamboo clumps. ไผ่สามต้น can count individual bamboo plants or stems in context, but it does not reproduce the requested clump count. Neither form is declared universally ungrammatical.
Not using ดอก in the requested mushroom-counting expression.
เห็ดสามต้นเห็ดสามดอกThe task requests เห็ดสามดอก. เห็ดสามต้น does not reproduce that complete requested expression. Learn the mushroom-classifier combination here without inferring an etymological rule from whether a mushroom has a stem.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use the classifier 'ต้น' (tôn), you first need to understand the general role of classifiers in Thai grammar. You must also be familiar with the word order for counting nouns (Noun + Number + Classifier) and for specifying nouns (Noun + Classifier + Demonstrative) to correctly apply 'ต้น' to plants, trees, or pillars.
