เธอ
Contextual References with เธอ
The examples select you in a destination question, study instruction, and direct question, she in a description, and your or her in a phone phrase. The pronoun alone does not establish gender, intimacy, or an emotional delivery.
How It Works
1. Five Complete Contexts
เธอจะไปไหนคะ is a destination question with the selected you reading. เธอเป็นคนสวยมาก is rendered with she in the selected description. เธอต้องตั้งใจเรียนนะ asks the addressee to study diligently; no teacher, age, or gentle authority is expressed. มือถือของเธอ leaves the choice between your and her phone to context. เธอ! ทำอะไรน่ะ addresses someone directly, but the written exclamation does not establish a recorded pitch or emotional state.
2. A Narrow Pronoun Witness
NIU’s complete selected เธอ entry lists you in familiar or subordinate contexts, her, and him, and gives one full station sentence. This supports contextual reference, not universal gender or sexual-orientation rules, historical royal usage, or a percentage of conversational choices. Compare the register overview through full examples. Read เขา as requested in the first exercise; comparison with เขา does not establish an overwhelming spoken preference.
3. Three Exact Tasks
Copy เขาไม่อยู่บ้าน for the requested เขา statement. Copy เจ้านายครับ คุณจะไปไหนครับ for the requested boss-address wording with คุณ. Copy นายไปเตะบอลไหม for the requested นาย invitation. The retained เธอ alternatives need their own referents and context; these exercises do not prohibit a gender group from using them. Compare ฉัน in its own complete examples. Pairing ฉัน with เธอ does not automatically imply romance, theatrical speech, or a required alternative such as เรา.
4. Complete Related Expressions
Read พวกเธอ with an identified group rather than assuming a female-only referent. In the phone example, ของ precedes เธอ to mark possession. Compare ตัวเอง through its own complete clauses without automatically interpreting a term of address as intimacy.
Examples (5)
- เธอจะไปไหนคะ
Where are you going?
Word by Word: you | will go | where | [particle คะ]
The question selects เธอ as the addressee. คะ is retained as a final particle; neither the particle nor pronoun proves the speaker’s identity or relationship.
- เธอเป็นคนสวยมาก
She is a very beautiful person.
Word by Word: she [selected referent] | be | person | beautiful | very
She is the selected contextual translation, not a rule that เธอ can refer only to women. The description is the example speaker’s statement.
- เธอต้องตั้งใจเรียนนะ
You must study diligently.
Word by Word: you | must | study diligently | [particle นะ]
ตั้งใจเรียน is rendered functionally as study diligently. The instruction contains no expressed teacher or elder, and นะ does not guarantee a gentle delivery.
- มือถือของเธอ
Your or her phone.
Word by Word: mobile phone | of | you or her [contextual referent]
มือถือ means mobile phone here. ของ marks possession; choosing your or her requires the referent from context.
- เธอ! ทำอะไรน่ะ
You! What are you doing?
Word by Word: you! | do | what | [particle น่ะ]
The selected English question uses ongoing wording. The Thai written example and exclamation do not supply audio or prove scolding, annoyance, or a specific pitch.
Common Mistakes
Not copying the requested เขา statement.
เธอไม่อยู่บ้านเขาไม่อยู่บ้านCopy เขาไม่อยู่บ้าน using เขา for this task. เธอไม่อยู่บ้าน can have a contextual referent too; the exercise does not establish a 90-percent spoken preference or a literary-only restriction.
Not copying the requested คุณ boss-address wording.
เจ้านายครับ เธอจะไปไหนครับเจ้านายครับ คุณจะไปไหนครับCopy เจ้านายครับ คุณจะไปไหนครับ with คุณ for the stated task. The retained เธอ alternative requires its own context; no automatic rudeness or politeness guarantee follows from this comparison.
Not copying the requested นาย football invitation.
เธอไปเตะบอลไหมนายไปเตะบอลไหมCopy นายไปเตะบอลไหม for the requested นาย invitation. The เธอ alternative is not prohibited by the speaker’s gender or sexual orientation. Compare names used as pronouns in their own complete contexts without a required substitution rule.
How It Connects
Learn This First
เธอ is a versatile pronoun that functions as an intimate 'you' among friends or partners, and as a third-person 'she'. To use it correctly, learners need to understand the Thai system of social registers and how it differs from the standard polite 'you' (คุณ) and the general third-person pronoun (เขา).
- คุณYou — Polite
Learning the standard polite 'you' provides the necessary contrast for understanding when to switch to the more intimate เธอ.
Level 1 - เขาHe, She and They
Since เธอ can also function as a third-person pronoun ('she'), understanding the basic third-person pronoun เขา helps clarify how gender and register interact in Thai.
