ตัวเอง

Myself and Yourself

Level 3

ตัวเอง can refer to oneself or one’s own self. It can also address the listener in a familiar context. Read the sentence to identify whose self is meant.

How It Works

Find the Referent:
ดูแลตัวเองด้วยนะ asks the listener to take care of themself. เขาทำเพื่อตัวเองเท่านั้น says he acts only for himself. ตัวเอง follows ของ in the speaker’s wish for a house of their own.

Doing Something Oneself:
เขาเรียนภาษาไทยด้วยตัวเอง describes studying Thai independently. It does not prove that the person never had advice, books, lessons, or any outside support. Compare เอง in the selected agency comparison.

Addressing the Listener:
ตัวเอง can be a familiar address meaning you. The food question uses that reading. The speaker and listener’s relationship determines whether it is suitable; it does not prove romance, a particular gender, or a polite effect.

Read Complete Phrases:
ตัวเอง is not tied to one grammatical person. Context identifies whose self or own property is meant. Words such as ผม have more than one sense; do not assign one hair-versus-pronoun meaning without the whole phrase. Compare possession with ของ and other uses with ด้วย.

Examples (5)

  1. ดูแลตัวเองด้วยนะ

    Take care of yourself.

Word by Word: look after + self + also + [softener]

The sentence asks the listener to take care of themself. It does not specify an occasion such as saying goodbye.

  2. เขาทำเพื่อตัวเองเท่านั้น

He only does it for himself.

Word by Word: he + do + for + self + only

Here, 'tua-eeng' follows the preposition 'phuea' (for) to indicate the beneficiary.

  3. ฉันอยากมีบ้านของตัวเอง

I want to have my own house.

    Word by Word: I + want + have + house + of + self

ของตัวเอง means of one’s own in this phrase about a house. The example retains ของ; it does not demonstrate an omission rule.

  4. ตัวเอง วันนี้ไปกินอะไรกันดี

Babe, what should we eat today?

Word by Word: you (sweet) + today + go + eat + what + [together] + good

ตัวเอง addresses the listener familiarly in this reading. The English chooses an affectionate rendering; the Thai sentence alone does not establish that the two people are romantic partners.

  5. เขาเรียนภาษาไทยด้วยตัวเอง

    He studies Thai by himself.

Word by Word: he + study + language + Thai + with + self

Using 'duay tua-eeng' to mean 'by oneself' or 'independently'.

Common Mistakes

  • Say That You Did The Action Yourself.

    ผมทำตัวเอง
    ผมทำเอง

ผมทำเอง puts emphasis on the speaker doing the action. ผมทำตัวเอง can have a reflexive reading about doing something to oneself in context. Choose the agency emphasis requested by this card; neither form by itself proves no outside help or a harmful result.

Learn This First

To understand ตัวเอง, you first need to be comfortable with basic Thai pronouns. Since ตัวเอง is a compound word, you should understand its components: 'ตัว' (body/self) and 'เอง' (oneself/by oneself). Together, they form the reflexive pronoun used to refer back to the subject of the sentence.
