ดวง

Classifier for Stars, Lights, And Stamps

Level 2

ดวง counts stars, lamps, stamps, seals, and souls in these examples. Roundness or brightness alone is not a rule for choosing it for every object.

How It Works

1. Read The Counted Noun
โคมไฟสองดวง counts two lamps. ดวงอาทิตย์หนึ่งดวง counts one sun, and ดาวหลายดวง counts many stars. ดวง is present inside the noun ดวงอาทิตย์ and again as its classifier in that specific counting phrase; this is not a reason to repeat it in every mention of the sun.

2. Notice Stamps And Seals
แสตมป์ห้าดวง counts five stamps. ตราสามดวง counts three seals in the stamping example. These uses do not require each stamp or seal to be round. No historical origin in wax-seal shape is established by the examples.

3. Read The Soul Example As A Statement
บ้านนี้มีวิญญาณสองดวง states that the house has two souls. It uses ดวง as the classifier for วิญญาณ. The grammar example does not establish that souls exist or that they are orbs of energy.

4. Choose By Noun And Meaning
Compare ลูก, อัน, and ใบ in their own full examples. The tasks here practise แสตมป์สองดวง and ดวงอาทิตย์หนึ่งดวง. Do not infer a speaker’s education or social status from a classifier choice, or use one physical-versus-symbolic division to decide every classifier.

Examples (6)

  1. บ้านนี้มีวิญญาณสองดวง

    This house has two souls.

Word by Word: house this have soul two [classifier]

วิญญาณ is counted with ดวง in this sentence. The sentence’s claim about two souls belongs to the example; no physical description of souls is established.

  2. ห้องนี้มีโคมไฟสองดวง

    This room has two lamps.

Word by Word: room this have lamp two [classifier]

ดวง counts the two โคมไฟ (lamps) in this example. Shape or brightness alone does not decide the classifier for every light-related noun.

  3. ระบบสุริยะนี้มีดวงอาทิตย์หนึ่งดวง

This solar system has one sun.

Word by Word: solar system this have sun one [classifier]

The displayed counting phrase is ดวงอาทิตย์หนึ่งดวง: the noun already contains ดวง, and a separate ดวง follows หนึ่ง as the classifier.

  4. มีดาวหลายดวงบนท้องฟ้า

There are many stars in the sky.

Word by Word: have star many [classifier] on sky

ดาวหลายดวง uses หลาย before the classifier ดวง to count an unspecified number of stars in this example.

  5. ฉันต้องซื้อแสตมป์ห้าดวง

I need to buy five stamps.

Word by Word: I must buy stamp five [classifier]

Even though stamps are flat, 'ดวง' is the standard classifier for them.

  6. เอกสารนี้ต้องประทับตราสามดวง

This document needs three seals stamped on it.

Word by Word: document this must stamp seal three [classifier]

ตราสามดวง counts three seals in this stamping example. Their shapes and a historical origin of the classifier are not stated.

Common Mistakes

  • For the conventional counting phrase “two stamps” practised here, using อัน instead of ดวง.

    แสตมป์สองอัน
    แสตมป์สองดวง

This task practises แสตมป์สองดวง, with ดวง counting the stamps. แสตมป์สองอัน changes the classifier in that requested phrase. This difference is not evidence of a speaker’s education or social worth.

  • For the displayed “one sun” counting phrase, using ลูก instead of ดวง.

    ดวงอาทิตย์หนึ่งลูก
    ดวงอาทิตย์หนึ่งดวง

The requested phrase is ดวงอาทิตย์หนึ่งดวง. ดวงอาทิตย์หนึ่งลูก changes its conventional classifier. Learn each noun’s counting construction rather than deriving every classifier from whether an object is physically round.
