ขวด
Classifier for Bottles
ขวด (khùat) names a bottle and serves as the unit in the displayed bottled-water phrase น้ำ + สอง + ขวด. The examples also use it to identify a bottle of beer or fish sauce.
How It Works
Counting And Identifying Bottles
ขวด (khùat) names a bottle or flask. It also serves as a classifier or unit for things in bottles. Read the noun and the rest of the phrase to see whether the sentence counts bottled contents, identifies a particular bottle, or talks about the physical container.
1. Counting Bottled Water
In ขอน้ำสองขวดครับ, น้ำ is the water, สอง is 'two', and ขวด is the bottle unit: Noun + Number + Classifier. The whole sentence requests two bottles of water. ครับ contributes a polite particle to the request; it is not an English word for 'bottle'. The task น้ำหนึ่งอัน → น้ำหนึ่งขวด asks for one bottle of water. Choosing ขวด makes that intended unit explicit; it is not a rule that all drinks must be in bottles.
2. Identifying A Bottle
เบียร์ขวดนี้ contains เบียร์ + ขวด + นี้, identifying 'this bottle of beer'. ราคาเท่าไหร่ asks how much it costs. น้ำปลาขวดนั้น contains น้ำปลา + ขวด + นั้น, identifying 'that bottle of fish sauce'; เค็มมาก describes it as very salty. Read the whole phrases rather than inferring that every demonstrative in Thai must follow a classifier. น้ำขวดนี้ is another bottle-identifying phrase.
3. The Physical Container
ผมมีขวดเปล่าห้าใบ describes five empty bottles. ขวดเปล่า names the empty containers and ห้าใบ counts them with ใบ (bai). This is a container use of ใบ, also illustrated in dictionary examples about a particular old bottle. It does not establish that emptiness always forces ใบ, that ขวด can never count physical bottles, or that fullness alone chooses a classifier. Compare complete phrases and the unit being described.
4. One And Word Order
น้ำหนึ่งขวด puts หนึ่ง before ขวด and highlights one bottle as a quantity. น้ำขวดหนึ่ง places หนึ่ง after ขวด and can introduce a bottle as an indefinite item in a suitable context. The two orders need not be explained as a fixed formal-versus-casual distinction. This lesson makes no claim about how frequently each occurs.
5. The Requested Counting Repair
The first task changes สองขวดน้ำ to น้ำสองขวด for the displayed water-counting phrase. Keep the water noun, the number two, and the bottle unit in that construction. The correction does not establish a single word order for every longer Thai noun phrase, nor does it imply that classifiers are required whenever any noun is mentioned.
Examples (4)
- ขอน้ำสองขวดครับ
May I have two bottles of water, please?
Word by Word: Request water two bottle [polite particle]
ขอน้ำสองขวดครับ requests two bottles of water. The counted phrase น้ำสองขวด has น้ำ + สอง + ขวด; the original English request supplies the courteous wording in context.
- เบียร์ขวดนี้ราคาเท่าไหร่
How much is this bottle of beer?
Word by Word: Beer bottle this price how much
เบียร์ขวดนี้ identifies this bottle of beer, and ราคาเท่าไหร่ asks its price. นี้ follows ขวด in this complete identifying phrase; that does not prove an obligatory classifier before every demonstrative.
- ผมมีขวดเปล่าห้าใบ
I have five empty bottles.
Word by Word: I have bottle empty five [container-classifier]
ขวดเปล่าห้าใบ counts five empty physical bottles with ใบ. This displayed choice does not prove that every empty bottle must use ใบ or that ขวด can never refer to physical bottles.
- น้ำปลาขวดนั้นเค็มมาก
That bottle of fish sauce is very salty.
Word by Word: Fish-sauce bottle that salty very
น้ำปลาขวดนั้น identifies that bottle of fish sauce. เค็มมาก describes it as very salty; the statement does not by itself specify a bottle size or an exact volume.
Common Mistakes
Ordering the displayed water-counting phrase.
สองขวดน้ำน้ำสองขวดFor this task, change สองขวดน้ำ to น้ำสองขวด: น้ำ names the water, สอง gives the number, and ขวด is the bottle unit. This is the displayed counting pattern, not every possible order in a longer Thai phrase.
Choosing a unit for the intended bottle of water.
น้ำหนึ่งอันน้ำหนึ่งขวดFor the intended one bottle of water, change น้ำหนึ่งอัน to น้ำหนึ่งขวด. The correction specifies the bottle unit instead of an unspecified item; it does not establish that อัน is always wrong for every drink-related object or that all water is counted in bottles.
