แก้ว
Counting Drinks with แก้ว
The displayed drink phrases use แก้ว as their glass unit. น้ำสองแก้ว counts two glasses of water.
How It Works
1. Read the Counting Phrase
น้ำสองแก้ว counts two glasses of water. Compare the displayed Noun + Number + แก้ว construction. This exercise asks for that full phrase, not for a rule about every possible Thai utterance.
2. Ask About a Quantity
วันนี้คุณดื่มกาแฟกี่แก้ว asks how many cups or glasses of coffee the person drank today. กี่ supplies the unknown quantity before แก้ว. The sentence alone does not add an obligatory past-tense marker.
3. Request or Price a Drink
ขอน้ำเปล่าหนึ่งแก้วครับ requests one glass of plain water. เบียร์สองแก้วราคาเท่าไหร่ asks the price of two glasses of beer. เอาน้ำส้มสามแก้วค่ะ requests three glasses of orange juice.
4. Keep the Requested Unit
น้ำสอง leaves the glass unit unspoken and does not reproduce the full counting phrase requested here. This comparison does not decide whether an abbreviated order could be understood in a particular conversation. สองแก้วน้ำ does not reproduce the requested drink-first counting phrase; the exercise does not reject every other reading of those words.
5. Count the Containers Separately
The empty-glassware exercise requests ซื้อแก้วสองใบ, using ใบ for the containers in that example. This task-specific contrast is not a universal ban on every other use of แก้ว. The displayed examples also do not establish a historical hot-versus-cold convention, cafe frequency, or a rule for every container material.
Examples (4)
- ขอน้ำเปล่าหนึ่งแก้วครับ
May I have one glass of plain water, please?
Word by Word: request + water + plain + one + glass + [polite particle]
The request begins with ขอ, followed by plain water and the quantity one glass. ครับ is the displayed polite particle.
- วันนี้คุณดื่มกาแฟกี่แก้ว
How many cups of coffee did you drink today?
Word by Word: today + you + drink + coffee + how many + glass
In this quantity question, กี่ appears before แก้ว. The English past reading fits asking about consumption earlier today; it is not evidence of an obligatory Thai past marker.
- เบียร์สองแก้วราคาเท่าไหร่
How much are two glasses of beer?
Word by Word: beer + two + glass + price + how much
The question prices two glasses of beer.
- เอาน้ำส้มสามแก้วค่ะ
I'll take three glasses of orange juice.
Word by Word: take + water + orange + three + glass + [polite particle]
The request specifies three glasses of orange juice and ends with the displayed polite particle ค่ะ.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested drink-first counting phrase.
สองแก้วน้ำน้ำสองแก้วThe exercise asks for น้ำสองแก้ว: water, two, then the glass unit. สองแก้วน้ำ does not reproduce that requested phrase. This comparison does not claim that noun-first order is mandatory in every Thai context.
Leaving the requested glass unit unspoken.
น้ำสองน้ำสองแก้วThe exercise asks for the complete phrase น้ำสองแก้ว. น้ำสอง leaves out แก้ว and does not reproduce the requested glass quantity. Whether an abbreviated order is understood depends on its conversation; it is not universally rejected here as ungrammatical.
Not reproducing the requested empty-glassware counting phrase.
ซื้อแก้วสองแก้วซื้อแก้วสองใบThe task asks you to buy the empty containers with ซื้อแก้วสองใบ. In this example, ใบ counts the glassware. ซื้อแก้วสองแก้ว does not reproduce the requested construction. The contrast does not establish that แก้ว can only ever count drinks.
