ที่ + Number

Ordinal Numbers

Level 2

ที่ + Number marks order in the displayed phrases. ที่สอง means second; หนังสือเล่มที่สาม selects the third book. Other retained phrases contain คน, บท, วัน, or ชั้น without a separate classifier word. Read the whole phrase rather than requiring a separate classifier in every ordinal expression.

How It Works

1. Order in Complete Phrases
In คนที่สอง, คน is followed by ที่สอง. Its written form contains one คน; a literal gloss should not insert a second classifier token. หนังสือเล่มที่สาม contains the separate classifier เล่ม between หนังสือ and ที่สาม. Compare these complete phrases without requiring one noun-plus-separate-classifier formula for every ordinal.

2. Lessons, Dates, and Floors
บทที่หนึ่ง identifies lesson one or the first lesson in the selected sequence. วันที่สิบเอ็ด is read here as the eleventh day of a month; the phrase does not name that month. ชั้นที่ห้า identifies the fifth floor. These examples do not establish that every numeric label or date must use the same construction.

3. The Displayed Eleven
The retained phrase and spelling task use สิบเอ็ด for eleven, giving ที่สิบเอ็ด. The alternative ที่สิบหนึ่ง does not match that requested written form. This task is not a claim about the reading of every identifier, decimal, larger number, or specialized counting convention.

4. Compare First Expressions
ที่หนึ่ง contains ที่ and หนึ่ง. Compare แรก in its own complete phrase, such as คนแรก. This comparison does not assign a universal first-place-versus-initial distinction or a frequency ranking. ลำดับที่ likewise needs its own complete context; these natives do not prove an official-document-only rule.

5. Quantity and Requested Packaging
The first task compares ที่สอง for second with สองที่ for two places or seats in its selected counting context. The second requests หนังสือเล่มที่สาม with the book classifier. หนังสือที่สาม can still identify a book in a suitable labeling context; it does not match the classifier construction requested here. Keep quantity, ordinal position, and contextual labels distinct.

Examples (5)

  1. คนที่สอง

    The second person.

Word by Word: person / [ordinal marker] / two

The native phrase has one written คน followed by ที่สอง. Read it as the second person without adding an extra classifier token to the literal gloss.

  2. บทที่หนึ่ง

Lesson one / The first lesson.

Word by Word: lesson / [ordinal marker] / one

บทที่หนึ่ง identifies lesson one, or the first lesson in the selected sequence. The phrase contains no separate classifier word and does not establish a frequency of textbook use.

  3. วันที่สิบเอ็ด

The eleventh day (of the month).

Word by Word: day / [ordinal marker] / ten / one [eleven form]

The selected date reading is the eleventh day of a month. The written eleven is สิบเอ็ด; no month is named in the native phrase.

  4. หนังสือเล่มที่สาม

    The third book.

Word by Word: book / [book classifier] / [ordinal marker] / three

This complete phrase contains หนังสือ, the book classifier เล่ม, and ที่สาม. The third-book reading belongs to this phrase, not a universal separate-classifier rule for every ordinal.

  5. ชั้นที่ห้า

    The fifth floor.

Word by Word: floor / [ordinal marker] / five

ชั้นที่ห้า identifies the fifth floor in the selected building context; ชั้น is followed directly by ที่ห้า.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing quantity with order.

    สองที่
    ที่สอง

The task requests ที่สอง, second. In the selected counting context, สองที่ means two places or seats. The two retained forms express different meanings here; compare their complete surrounding phrases in other contexts.

  • Leaving out เล่ม in the requested book-classifier phrase.

    หนังสือที่สาม
    หนังสือเล่มที่สาม

The task requests หนังสือเล่มที่สาม with เล่ม. หนังสือที่สาม may be meaningful when labeling or identifying a book in context, but it does not practice the requested construction. This pair does not make classifier omission universally ungrammatical.

  • Changing สิบเอ็ด in the requested written ordinal.

    ที่สิบหนึ่ง
    ที่สิบเอ็ด

The task practices ที่สิบเอ็ด with the written eleven สิบเอ็ด. The retained alternative ที่สิบหนึ่ง does not match that exact requested spelling. This exercise does not prescribe the reading of every number ending in one across all numerical contexts.

Learn This First

To understand ordinal numbers (first, second, third), you need to be familiar with the basic Thai numbering system. The pattern simply places the word 'ที่' before a number to indicate its position in a sequence.
