ข้าง ๆ
Beside
Use ข้าง ๆ for “beside.” In these examples it relates a house, a person, a key, or a restaurant to a reference place or object.
How It Works
1. Read the Written Form
ข้าง ๆ contains ข้าง and the repetition mark. Read the complete expression as “beside” here; this spelling alone does not establish a fixed degree of approximation or a formal-writing preference.
2. Describe a Location
The displayed pattern is [Subject] + อยู่ + ข้าง ๆ + [Reference]. บ้านของฉันอยู่ข้าง ๆ โรงเรียน locates the house beside the school. The reference follows ข้าง ๆ in this example.
3. Read the Action Context
เขานั่งข้าง ๆ ผม describes sitting beside the speaker. วางกุญแจไว้ข้าง ๆ โทรศัพท์นะ requests placement beside the phone. These sentences use action verbs rather than inserting อยู่ before ข้าง ๆ. Keep the whole verb phrase and reference together.
4. Distinguish Spatial and Sequential Readings
In the station exercise, the requested meaning is the next station in a sequence, expressed by สถานีต่อไป. สถานีข้าง ๆ instead suggests a station beside a reference. The location exercise requests a full statement with อยู่; ปากกาข้าง ๆ สมุด can instead be read as a noun phrase, “the pen beside the notebook,” in context.
Examples (4)
- บ้านของฉันอยู่ข้าง ๆ โรงเรียน
My house is next to the school.
Word by Word: House of me be-at beside school
khǎawng links the house to its possessor, and yùu states its location beside the school.
- เขานั่งข้าง ๆ ผม
He sits beside me.
Word by Word: He sit beside me
Here, the pattern follows an action verb (sitting) to show position.
- วางกุญแจไว้ข้าง ๆ โทรศัพท์นะ
Put the key beside the phone, okay?
Word by Word: place key | leave in position | beside phone | [request particle]
The sentence requests placement beside the phone. Final ná is part of this request; its presence alone does not guarantee a particular degree of softness or politeness.
- ร้านอาหารอยู่ข้าง ๆ ธนาคาร
The restaurant is beside the bank.
Word by Word: Shop food be-at beside bank
This sentence locates the restaurant beside the bank.
Common Mistakes
Using a spatial phrase when the exercise requests the next station in a sequence.
สถานีข้าง ๆสถานีต่อไปFor the requested sequential meaning, reproduce สถานีต่อไป. สถานีข้าง ๆ instead suggests a station beside a reference; that spatial phrase can be meaningful in a different context.
Omitting อยู่ when the exercise requests the displayed complete location statement.
ปากกาข้าง ๆ สมุดปากกาอยู่ข้าง ๆ สมุดReproduce ปากกาอยู่ข้าง ๆ สมุด with yùu for this requested location statement. ปากกาข้าง ๆ สมุด can be a noun phrase, “the pen beside the notebook,” rather than this complete statement; the exercise does not ban noun phrases or action-verb examples.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'ข้าง ๆ', you first need to know how the repetition mark 'ๆ' works in Thai script. Additionally, since this pattern is used to describe location, you should be familiar with the verb 'อยู่' (to be located) and the basic preposition 'ที่' (at) to form complete sentences.
