Verb + ให้หมด

Do All of It

Level 4

Use Verb + ให้หมด to say 'do it all' or 'finish it all.' It focuses on the goal of total completion.

How It Works

A Total Result As A Goal
In Verb + ให้หมด, the action is directed toward a total result. หมด supplies the idea of all or being used up. The full phrase shows what must be finished, removed, or covered.

Read What ‘All’ Refers To
In กินข้าวให้หมด, the goal is to eat all the rice. In ใช้งบประมาณนี้ให้หมด, it is to spend the full budget. บอกความจริงมาให้หมด asks for the whole truth. Total coverage can also concern removing something, as in an instruction to remove all the rust, rather than consuming an object.

Read The Whole Instruction
ออกไปให้หมดเลย addresses a group in the example below: the intended result is that everyone leaves. Learn this whole expression rather than assuming that ให้หมด with every verb always refers to all participants. In กินข้าวให้หมดนะ, นะ helps frame the request in its context; the words alone do not guarantee how every listener will hear it.

Goal And Achieved Result
The construction can set a desired result without saying that it occurred. Compare หมด for total coverage or depletion and เสร็จ for finishing a task. Read the completed event and the relevant amount together; an event happening does not by itself establish that every item was used up.

Examples (5)

  1. กินข้าวให้หมดนะ

    Eat all your rice, okay?

Word by Word: eat rice for all [softener]

The request sets eating all the rice as the goal. นะ belongs to this complete request; the sentence does not report that the rice has already been eaten.

  2. ออกไปให้หมดเลย

Everyone get out! (All of you, leave!)

Word by Word: exit go for all [emphasis]

In this instruction to a group, the intended reading is that everyone should leave. It illustrates this whole expression rather than a rule about every intransitive verb.

  3. ลืมเรื่องเก่าๆ ให้หมด

Forget all the old stories completely.

Word by Word: forget story old [plural] for all

An abstract usage where the action of 'forgetting' is applied to the entirety of the memories.

  4. เราต้องใช้งบประมาณนี้ให้หมด

We must spend this entire budget.

Word by Word: we must use budget this for all

In a professional context, this indicates the goal of utilizing the full amount of a resource.

  5. บอกความจริงมาให้หมด

Tell the whole truth (tell it all).

Word by Word: tell truth come for all

Used when demanding that no information be left out.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the wrong order for the intended instruction “Eat all the rice.”

    กินให้หมดข้าว
    กินข้าวให้หมด

To give the requested instruction ‘Eat all the rice,’ use the displayed complete phrase กินข้าวให้หมด. Here ข้าว names the rice before ให้หมด states the desired total result. This card does not establish a universal word-order rule for every construction containing หมด.

  • Leaving out the action in the intended instruction “Spend all the money.”

    ให้หมดเงิน
    ใช้เงินให้หมด

For the intended instruction to spend all the money, name the action ใช้ before the money and result: ใช้เงินให้หมด. Here ให้ introduces the desired result. This does not say that ให้ can never mean “give” in other constructions.
