da

Reporting Thoughts and Statements

Level 4

Da introduces a content clause after verbs such as vedeti, misliti and povedati.

How It Works

Da introduces a content clause after verbs such as vedeti, misliti and povedati. Slovenian does not mechanically apply English tense backshift; the tense reflects the intended time relationship.

In Povedal je, da nima časa, the speaker reports lack of time relative to the reported situation. Slovenian may keep a present where English naturally uses had. Choose the intended chronology instead of copying English tense backshift.
