Parenthetical Clauses

Level 6

A parenthetical clause adds an aside and is separated from the main sentence by punctuation.

How It Works

A parenthetical clause adds an aside and is separated from the main sentence by punctuation. Removing the aside should leave the main sentence's grammatical structure intact.

Remove the aside to check the main sentence: Ana je že odšla remains complete after kot veste is omitted. Parenthetical punctuation marks a change in discourse level. The aside's own person and tense do not control agreement in the main clause.

Examples (3)

  1. Ana je, kot veste, že odšla.

Ana has, as you know, already left.

  2. Ta knjiga je, mislim, zelo dobra.

This book is, I think, very good.

  3. Marko, če se prav spomnim, živi tukaj.

Marko, if I remember correctly, lives here.
