sva, sta, smo, ste, so

Being in the Dual and Plural

Level 1

Biti has sva for first-person dual and sta for second- and third-person dual.

How It Works

Biti has sva for first-person dual and sta for second- and third-person dual. Its plural forms are smo, ste, so. The subject and any predicate adjective must agree in number.

Use sva only when the speaker belongs to a pair. Sta serves both a pair being addressed and a pair being discussed, so context or a pronoun distinguishes vidva sta from onadva sta. Plural so never substitutes for sta merely because two names are coordinated.

Examples (3)

  1. Midva sva prijatelja.

    We two are friends.

  2. Ana in Eva sta doma.

Ana and Eva are at home.

  3. Otroci so veseli.

    The children are happy.
