Making an Object the Topic

Level 5Sounds Like tematizaciǰa obǰekta

In Serbian, placing a direct or indirect object at the beginning of the clause (OVS or OSV) signals that it is the shared topic—what the sentence is about—rather than new information. The object keeps its oblique case (accusative, dative, etc.), and enclitics follow Wackernagel's Law by immediately attaching to this fronted constituent.

How It Works

Syntactic and Discourse Mechanics:
Serbian uses rich case inflection, freeing linear word order from the sole burden of identifying who did what to whom. When a direct or indirect object is already established in discourse or shared knowledge, speakers front it to serve as the discourse topic (тематизација објекта).

Key Structural Rules:

  • Case Preservation: The fronted noun phrase retains its grammatical case (e.g., accusative, dative, or genitive). It is never turned into a nominative subject.
  • Pronominal Objects and Contrast: Because unstressed enclitic pronouns cannot carry accent or stand sentence-initially under Wackernagel’s Law, a neutrally topical, given pronoun is simply realized as an enclitic in second position (Видео сам га). Fronting a tonic pronoun to initial position (њега, њу / њему, њој) is not neutral topicalization; rather, it inherently marks contrastive focus or a contrastive topic: Њега сам видео (а њу нисам).
  • Wackernagel’s Law and Clitic Placement: Enclitics occupy the structural second position. In standard Serbian, clitics can appear after the entire first syntactic constituent (First Phrase / 1P: [Тај нови предлог] [су] сви подржали) or after the first stressed word (First Word / 1W: Тај су нови предлог сви подржали). While contemporary written prose often shows a stylistic preference for 1P placement after multi-word noun phrases, 1W clitic placement remains grammatically acceptable and common, especially when the initial word is a demonstrative or possessive modifier.
  • No Resumptive Clitics: Unlike languages with clitic doubling, standard Serbian does not permit an echo clitic in the clause. Say Ту књигу сам прочитао, never *Ту књигу сам је прочитао.
  • Prosody and Punctuation: A topicalized object is syntactically integrated into the clause. It carries a non-terminal rising or slightly rising pitch contour (anticadence) that signals utterance continuation, and it must not be separated by a comma.

Topicalization vs. Focalization vs. Passive:

  • Topicalization: The fronted object is known information with non-terminal rising topic pitch (Ову песму знам. = 'As for this song, I know it').
  • Focalization: The fronted element carries heavy nuclear contrastive stress and represents new or corrective information (ПЕСМУ сам научио, а не текст! = 'It is the SONG that I learned, not the lyrics!').
  • Passive Voice: Changes the patient into a nominative grammatical subject and changes the verb morphology (Књига је прочитана = 'The book has been read'). Topicalization achieves thematic prominence while keeping the verb active and the patient in an oblique case.

Examples (4)

  1. Тај предлог су сви чланови одбора одмах прихватили.

That proposal, all board members accepted immediately.

Word by Word: that proposal have all members of-board immediately accepted

The direct object 'тај предлог' is fronted in the accusative case to connect with previous discourse. The auxiliary clitic 'су' immediately occupies second position.

  2. Ову књигу сам прочитао још прошле године.

This book, I already read last year.

Word by Word: this book have-1sg read already last year

Topicalization with a dropped subject pronoun. The accusative phrase 'ову књигу' hosts the auxiliary clitic 'сам'.

  3. Нашим гостима је директор лично пожелео добродошлицу.

Our guests, the director welcomed personally.

Word by Word: our guests is director personally wished welcome

An indirect object in the dative case ('нашим гостима') is fronted as the topic, followed immediately by the clitic 'је'.

  4. Ове старе фотографије сам пронашао у очевој фиоци.

These old photographs, I found in my father's drawer.

Word by Word: these old photographs have-1sg found in father's drawer

The complex accusative noun phrase 'ове старе фотографије' acts as a single constituent, after which the enclitic 'сам' appears.

Common Mistakes

  • Converting the fronted object into the nominative case

    Ова књига сам прочитао јуче.
    Ову књигу сам прочитао јуче.

Learners accustomed to English or other rigid SVO languages often assume sentence-initial nouns must be in the nominative case. In Serbian, topicalized objects retain their oblique case (here, accusative 'ову књигу').

  • Inserting an ungrammatical resumptive clitic pronoun

Кључ сам га изгубио на улици.
    Кључ сам изгубио на улици.

Standard Serbian topicalization leaves an empty gap rather than doubling the fronted object with a redundant pronominal clitic ('га').

  • Separating the topicalized object with a comma

    Тај филм, гледали смо синоћ.
    Тај филм смо гледали синоћ.

Unlike English hanging topics or left-dislocation, clause-internal topicalization in Serbian is prosodically and syntactically integrated. Adding a comma wrongly separates the constituent from its enclitic host.

Learn This First

Making an object the topic involves moving a non-subject argument to the initial position of a clause. To do this correctly, learners must understand the discourse distinction between topic and focus, know how fronting affects standard second-position clitic placement, and maintain the proper case markings on the fronted object.
