бы

Mobile Particle Бы

Level 3Sounds Like poziciâ by

The particle бы (or б) turns a sentence into the subjunctive mood. It is used for 'would', 'could', or 'if only' scenarios. It is mobile, meaning it can move around the sentence, but it must be paired with a past-tense verb or an infinitive.

How It Works

The particle бы is the key to expressing unreality in Russian. Here are its primary functions:

  • Hypothetical Situations: Used in 'if-then' structures to describe things that aren't happening. Note that бы appears in both the 'if' clause and the 'result' clause.
  • Politeness: It softens statements. Instead of 'I want', Russians say 'I would like' (Я хотел бы) to be more polite.
  • Wishes: When used with an infinitive, it expresses a strong desire or 'if only' sentiment (e.g., Поспать бы! - If only I could sleep!). It can also follow a noun or adverb to express a specific craving (e.g., Чаю бы! - I'd love some tea!).
  • Advice and Suggestions: Using бы with the past tense is a common way to offer a suggestion or advice (e.g., Ты бы отдохнул - You should get some rest).

Placement Rules:
1. бы is an enclitic, meaning it doesn't carry its own stress and 'leans' on the word before it. Its position is mobile; placing it after a specific word emphasizes that part of the sentence.
2. It usually follows the verb or the subject, but it can follow conjunctions like если (if) or что (that).
3. Short Form: You can use б instead of бы only if the preceding word ends in a vowel (e.g., я б, она б). It is strictly prohibited to use the short form after a consonant (e.g., он б or сказал б are incorrect).
4. Tense Restriction: You cannot use бы with present or future tense verb forms. Even if you are talking about tomorrow, you must use the past tense form: Я бы пошёл завтра (I would go tomorrow).

Examples (5)

  1. Я хотел бы заказать кофе.

I would like to order a coffee.

Word by Word: I wanted would to-order coffee.

A classic example of using the past tense of 'want' + бы to create a polite request.

  2. Если бы у меня были деньги, я бы купил машину.

If I had money, I would buy a car.

Word by Word: If would at me were money, I would bought car.

In a hypothetical condition, the particle бы must appear in both parts of the sentence.

  3. Сейчас бы поесть!

If only I could eat right now!

Word by Word: Now would to-eat!

Using бы with an infinitive expresses a wish or a longing for something.

  4. Что бы ты сделал на моём месте?

What would you do in my place?

Word by Word: What would you did on my place?

Here, бы follows the question word 'что'. Note that 'что бы' is written as two words here because бы is mobile.

  5. Вы не могли бы мне помочь?

    Could you help me?

Word by Word: You not could would me to-help?

This uses не могли бы to form a very polite request.

Common Mistakes

  • Using бы with a present tense verb.

    Я хочу бы чай.
    Я хотел бы чай.

The particle бы can only be used with past tense forms or infinitives. Using it with 'хочу' (present) is grammatically impossible.

  • Starting a sentence with бы.

    Бы я пошёл в кино.
    Я бы пошёл в кино.

As an enclitic particle, бы must follow another word; it cannot stand alone at the very beginning of a sentence.

  • Confusing 'чтобы' (conjunction) with 'что бы' (pronoun + particle).

Я не знаю, чтобы мне купить.
Я не знаю, что бы мне купить.

If you are asking 'what' would happen, it is two words (что бы). Use one word (чтобы) only for purpose or intent clauses.
