если бы ..., то ...
Hypothetical Condition
если бы [past tense], (то) ... бы [past tense]
How It Works
The Russian conditional mood is used for unreal or hypothetical scenarios. It is formed using the particle бы and the past tense form of the verb. Unlike English, Russian uses one single structure for all hypothetical scenarios, whether they refer to the past, present, or future.
Key Rules:
- Verb Agreement: Because the conditional uses the past tense, the verb must agree in gender and number with the subject (e.g., я бы хотел for a man, я бы хотела for a woman).
- The Particle 'бы': This particle must appear in both the 'if' clause and the 'then' clause. It cannot start a sentence or a clause; it must follow another word. In informal speech, it can be shortened to б after vowels.
- Punctuation: A comma is always required to separate the 'if' clause from the result clause, regardless of the order.
- Hypothetical vs. Real: Use this pattern only for unreal situations. For real future possibilities, use если + future indicative (e.g., Если будет солнце, мы пойдём гулять).
- The Conjunction 'то': The word то (then) often starts the second clause but is optional.
Examples (5)
- Если бы у меня было время, я бы тебе помог.
If I had time, I would help you.
Word by Word: If would at me was time, I would to you helped.
This refers to a present hypothetical situation. Note the use of the past tense 'было' and 'помог'.
- Если бы ты позвонил вчера, мы бы встретились.
If you had called yesterday, we would have met.
Word by Word: If would you called yesterday, we would met.
This refers to a past counterfactual. The structure is identical to the present hypothetical, but 'вчера' clarifies the timing.
- Если бы она знала правду, она бы расстроилась.
If she knew the truth, she would be upset.
Word by Word: If would she knew truth, she would upset.
Notice the feminine agreement in the verbs 'знала' and 'расстроилась' to match the subject 'она'.
- Мы бы пошли гулять, если бы не было дождя.
We would go for a walk if it weren't raining.
Word by Word: We would went walk, if would not was rain.
The order of the clauses can be swapped. A comma is always required between the two clauses.
- Если б я был богат, я б купил машину.
If I were rich, I'd buy a car.
Word by Word: If [particle] I was rich, I [particle] bought car.
In informal speech, 'бы' is often shortened to 'б' after words ending in a vowel.
Common Mistakes
Forgetting the second 'бы' in the result clause.
Если бы я знал, я помог.Если бы я знал, я бы помог.In Russian, the particle 'бы' is required in both the condition and the result. Leaving it out of the second part makes the sentence grammatically incomplete.
Using the future tense for hypothetical scenarios.
Если бы я выиграю в лотерею, я куплю дом.Если бы я выиграл в лотерею, я бы купил дом.Even if the event might happen in the future, the 'бы' particle requires the past tense form of the verb. For real possibilities, use если + future without 'бы'.
Forgetting gender agreement in the verb.
Если бы Анна знала, она бы сказал.Если бы Анна знала, она бы сказала.Since the conditional mood uses the past tense form, the verb must agree in gender and number with the subject.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn hypothetical conditions in Russian, you first need to understand how the conditional particle 'бы' works with past tense verbs to create a non-indicative mood. You also need a solid grasp of basic conditional structures using 'если' and the ability to conjugate verbs in the past tense, as these forms are repurposed for hypothetical meanings.
- бы + Past TenseConditional with Бы
The hypothetical condition 'если бы' is built directly upon the conditional mood construction using the particle 'бы' and the past tense.
Level 3 - если + Future TenseReal Condition with Future
Understanding the basic structure of real conditional sentences with 'если' is necessary before moving to hypothetical or counterfactual conditions.
