Conditional with Бы

Level 3Sounds Like by + prošedšee

The Russian conditional mood uses the particle бы + a verb in the past tense. It is used for hypothetical situations, polite requests, and wishes.

How It Works

The conditional mood (сослагательное наклонение) is formed by taking the past tense form of a verb and adding the particle бы.

1. Formation:
The verb changes based on the subject's gender and number:

  • Masculine: Он бы читал
  • Feminine: Она бы читала
  • Neuter: Оно бы читало
  • Plural: Они бы читали

2. The Particle 'бы':
The particle бы is mobile. It usually follows the verb or the first stressed word in the sentence. In speech, it can contract to б after a vowel (e.g., 'я б'), but never after a consonant.

3. Usage:

  • Hypotheticals: 'Я бы пошёл' (I would go).
  • Politeness: Using the conditional softens a request. Instead of 'I want', use 'Я хотел бы' (I would like).
  • Counterfactuals: Situations that didn't happen. Context tells you if it's about the past or present.

4. If-Clauses:
When creating an 'if' sentence, you must use бы in both the 'if' part and the 'result' part. The 'if' part usually starts with если бы.

Examples (4)

  1. Я бы с удовольствием пошёл с вами в кино.

I would go to the cinema with you with pleasure.

Word by Word: I would with pleasure gone with you to cinema.

A polite hypothetical statement. Note that 'пошёл' is masculine because the speaker is male.

  2. Если бы я знал об этом вчера, я бы тебе позвонил.

If I had known about that yesterday, I would have called you.

Word by Word: If would I known about that yesterday, I would to-you called.

A past counterfactual. The word 'вчера' (yesterday) provides the timeframe, as the verb form itself is time-neutral.

  3. Вы не могли бы передать мне соль?

Could you pass me the salt?

Word by Word: You not could would pass to-me salt?

This is a standard way to make a polite request in Russian.

  4. Она бы купила это платье, но у неё нет денег.

She would buy this dress, but she has no money.

Word by Word: She would bought this dress, but at her no money.

A present hypothetical. The verb 'купила' agrees with the feminine subject 'она'.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the second 'бы' in conditional sentences.

Если бы я знал, я помог.
Если бы я знал, я бы помог.

In Russian, the particle 'бы' must appear in both the 'if' clause and the 'then' clause.

  • Using the wrong gender for the verb.

Анна сказала, что она бы пошёл.
Анна сказала, что она бы пошла.

Because the conditional uses the past tense form, the verb must match the gender of the subject.

  • Trying to use 'бы' with the future tense.

    Я буду бы читать.
    Я бы читал.

The conditional mood only uses the past tense form of the verb. You cannot combine it with future auxiliaries like 'буду'.
