Negation in the Past Tense

Level 2Sounds Like ne + prošedšee vremâ

To say you didn't do something in the past, place не directly before the past-tense verb. The verb still agrees with the subject in gender and number.

How It Works

Negation in the past tense is straightforward in structure but involves specific rules for case usage and existence.

1. Basic Structure:
The particle не is placed immediately before the verb. Russian does not use auxiliary verbs like 'did' for negation.

  • Я не работал. (I didn't work.)
  • Она не пришла. (She didn't come.)

2. Genitive of Negation:
When a verb is negated, the direct object often shifts from the Accusative to the Genitive case, especially to emphasize total negation or with abstract nouns.

  • Я не читал этой книги. (I haven't read this book [at all].)
  • Он не получал письма. (He didn't receive the letter.)

3. Negated Existence (Absence):
To say someone or something was not present, use the impersonal form не было followed by the subject in the Genitive case. This form remains не было regardless of the gender or number of the person missing.

  • Его не было дома. (He wasn't home.)
  • Денег не было. (There was no money.)

4. Aspectual Nuance:

  • Imperfective: Negates a process, habit, or states a general fact that an event didn't occur.
  • Perfective: Negates a specific result, often implying an action was expected but failed.

5. The Stress Shift:
In some common verbs (быть, дать, жить, пить), the stress shifts to the particle не in the masculine, neuter, and plural forms (e.g., не был, не было, не были). In the feminine form, the stress remains on the verb ending (не была).

Examples (5)

  1. Я не знал, что вы уже приехали.

I didn't know that you had already arrived.

Word by Word: I not knew, that you already arrived.

Uses the imperfective verb не знал to describe a state of not knowing in the past.

  2. Она так и не пришла на встречу.

She never did show up for the meeting.

Word by Word: She so and not came to meeting.

Uses the perfective verb не пришла to indicate the failure of an expected result.

  3. Вчера в офисе не было директора.

The director wasn't in the office yesterday.

Word by Word: Yesterday in office not was director.

Demonstrates the impersonal construction не было followed by the genitive case to indicate absence.

  4. Я не видел этого фильма.

    I haven't seen this movie.

Word by Word: I not saw this movie.

Shows the genitive of negation where the direct object 'фильм' changes to 'фильма' after a negated verb.

  5. Никто не видел мой телефон?

    Has nobody seen my phone?

Word by Word: Nobody not saw my phone?

An example of double negation: the pronoun 'никто' requires the verb to be negated with не видел.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'do-support' (like the verb делать) to negate the past tense.

Я не делал знал об этом.
    Я не знал об этом.

English speakers often try to translate 'did not' literally. In Russian, you only need the particle 'не' before the main verb.

  • Omitting the second negation when using negative pronouns.

    Я ничего видел.
    Я ничего не видел.

Russian requires 'double negation.' If you use a word like 'ничего' (nothing), you must still include 'не' before the verb.

  • Misplacing the stress in the feminine form of 'быть' (to be).

    Она не́ была дома.
    Она не была́ дома.

While stress shifts to 'не' in masculine, neuter, and plural forms (не́ был, не́ было, не́ были), the feminine form 'была' always keeps the stress on the final 'а'.
