Relative Place Words

Level 3Sounds Like gde / kuda / otkuda

Use где for static locations (where), куда for destinations (where to), and откуда for origins (where from) when connecting two parts of a sentence.

How It Works

Relative place words are essential for building complex sentences. They replace a prepositional phrase and a noun, acting as a shortcut for the learner.

1. Где (Static Location)
Used when the action in the subordinate clause happens at a specific place. It can replace various static location phrases, not just the Prepositional location after в and на, but also others like у/около + genitive or под/за + instrumental. Note: While где can replace phrases with под or за, doing so erases the specific spatial nuance (e.g., 'under' or 'behind' becomes a general 'at/in/near'). To preserve the exact meaning, use the corresponding preposition + который.
Example: Город, где я живу... (The city where I live...)
Note: Где is also frequently used in abstract contexts (e.g., ситуация, где... - a situation where...).

2. Куда (Direction/Destination)
Used when the action in the subordinate clause involves movement toward a place. It can replace various directional phrases, such as the Accusative destination after в and на or к + dative. Note: While куда can replace phrases with к, doing so erases the specific directional nuance (e.g., 'up to' or 'towards' becomes a general 'to'). To preserve the exact meaning, use the corresponding preposition + который.
Example: Страна, куда мы едем... (The country where [to which] we are going...)

3. Откуда (Origin/Source)
Used when the action in the subordinate clause involves movement from a place. It corresponds to the Genitive after из and от or с + genitive. It can be replaced by из/от/с + который.
Example: Дом, откуда он вышел... (The house where [from which] he came out...)

Key Rules:

  • Animacy Restriction: These relative words cannot be used with animate nouns (people). You must use prepositions with который instead (e.g., друг, у которого я живу, NOT друг, где я живу). However, grammatically inanimate collective nouns representing groups of people (e.g., семья, команда, руководство) can be used with где (e.g., семья, где я вырос).
  • Agreement with Который: If you replace где/куда/откуда with который, the pronoun must agree in gender and number with the antecedent noun (e.g., школа, в которой..., not just the masculine form). The case of который is determined by the preposition and its role in the subordinate clause. While replacing где often involves the Prepositional case (with в/на), it requires the Genitive or Instrumental if replacing prepositions like у/около or под/за. Replacing куда requires the Accusative, and откуда requires the Genitive.
  • Correlative Words: These relative words often pair with demonstrative adverbs in the main clause: там ... где (there ... where), туда ... куда (to there ... to where), оттуда ... откуда (from there ... from where). Example: Мы пойдём туда, куда ты хочешь.
  • Punctuation: You must always place a comma before the relative word to separate the clauses.
  • Verb Logic: The choice between где and куда depends entirely on the verb inside the subordinate clause, not the main clause.
  • Antecedents: These words usually follow a noun denoting a place (e.g., место, дом, город, парк).

Examples (5)

  1. Я помню парк, где мы встретились.

I remember the park where we met.

Word by Word: I remember park, where we met.

Here 'где' is used because 'встретились' (met) describes a static location where the event occurred.

  2. Это тот самый магазин, куда она часто ходит.

This is the very store where she often goes.

Word by Word: This is that very store, where-to she often goes.

We use 'куда' because the verb 'ходит' (goes) implies movement toward a destination.

  3. Он вернулся в город, откуда уехал в детстве.

He returned to the city he had left in his childhood.

Word by Word: He returned to city, where-from (he) left in childhood.

We use 'откуда' because the action involves leaving from a point of origin.

  4. Я не знаю места, где лежит мой паспорт.

I don't know the place where my passport is lying.

Word by Word: I not know place, where lies my passport.

The verb 'лежит' (lies/is located) is static, so 'где' is required.

  5. Покажи мне полку, куда ты положил ключи.

Show me the shelf where you put the keys.

Word by Word: Show me shelf, where-to you put keys.

Even though the keys are now 'at' the shelf, the verb 'положил' (put/placed) describes the motion of putting them there, requiring 'куда'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'где' for motion toward a destination.

Это ресторан, где мы идём сегодня.
Это ресторан, куда мы идём сегодня.

English uses 'where' for both location and destination, but Russian requires 'куда' if the verb in the clause (идём) involves movement toward a goal.

  • Adding a redundant preposition before the relative word.

Я был в доме, в где он живёт.
Я был в доме, где он живёт.

Relative adverbs like 'где' already include the meaning of the preposition. Adding 'в' or 'на' before them is ungrammatical.
