из/от + Genitive
Genitive After Из and От
Both из and от mean 'from' and require the genitive case. Use из when leaving the inside of a place (the opposite of 'в'). Use от when moving away from a person or a specific point (the opposite of 'к').
How It Works
In Russian, 'from' is split into different prepositions based on the spatial relationship and the preposition used for the destination:
1. из + Genitive (Out of)
This preposition is the directional mirror of в (into). If you go into a building, city, or country, you come out of it using из.
- Я иду из школы. (I am coming from/out of school.)
- Он приехал из России. (He arrived from Russia.)
2. с + Genitive (Off of / From)
This is the mirror of на (onto/to). It is used for surfaces, events, or specific locations that take на.
- Я иду с работы. (I am coming from work.)
- Книга упала со стола. (The book fell off the table.)
3. от + Genitive (Away from / From a person)
This is the mirror of к (toward). It is used for:
- People: Use от when receiving something from a person or moving away from them. Письмо от мамы (A letter from mom).
- Distance: Moving away from a point. Отойди от двери (Step away from the door).
- Cause/Remedy: Лекарство от гриппа (Medicine for/against the flu).
4. Phonological Variants (изо / ото / со)
Sometimes an 'о' is added to help with pronunciation before difficult consonant clusters:
- изо всех сил (with all one's might)
- ото сна (from sleep)
- со стола (from the table)
Examples (5)
- Я приехал из Лондона вчера.
I arrived from London yesterday.
Word by Word: I arrived out-of London yesterday.
Use 'из' because London is a city (an enclosed geographic space) that you were 'in'.
- Это подарок от моей сестры.
This is a gift from my sister.
Word by Word: This [is] gift from my sister.
Use 'от' because the source is a person.
- Отойди, пожалуйста, от окна.
Please move away from the window.
Word by Word: Step-away, please, from window.
Use 'от' to indicate moving away from a specific point in space.
- Мы вышли из магазина.
We walked out of the store.
Word by Word: We walked-out out-of store.
Use 'из' because you are physically exiting the interior of the building.
- Я получил письмо от врача.
I received a letter from the doctor.
Word by Word: I received letter from doctor.
Even if the doctor is at a hospital, the letter comes 'from the person', so 'от' is required.
Common Mistakes
Using 'из' for people.
Я иду из врача.Я иду от врача.Using 'из' implies you were physically inside the doctor's body. Use 'от' for people.
Using 'из' for locations that take 'на'.
Я пришёл из почты.Я пришёл с почты.If a location uses 'на' (like почта, работа, вокзал), the 'from' preposition must be 'с', not 'из'.
Forgetting the genitive case.
из Москваиз МосквыBoth 'из' and 'от' always require the noun to be in the genitive case.
